EDIT: 23 inch at the top of the seat tube, 22 at the middle of the top tube along the seat tube. So I guess a 22 inch? Generally, older steel mountain bikes with horizontal top tubes fit me perfectly in the 22-23 inch range. This bike is going on it's second incarnation since I bought it at the flea market. So far it's been WELL worth the $25 I spent, hehe.

Just found my bar end shifter pods, and joy of joys, a set of flat base washers I didn't know where with them in the stash! All I need is a set of seven speed down tube shifters.

Thanks. I think wrap color/style could make or break this though. A tough call. I know there's a dark green Deda(sp?), but it might be the wrong shade. Black synthetic cork isn't going to cut it either.,,,,BD


Maybe this? It would pick up the highlight strip on the tires, which will probably stay, in the form of new ones when these wear out. I love the look of the tires. They're like a slimmed down Fire XC Pro.

I have been watching this thread for a while - I've had my 1994 Kona Lava Dome for over a year now in parts awaiting drop bar treatment.. but waiting for 7 speed brifters. Well I found them and around that time I met a local tattoo artist who closed up shop a while ago and jokingly I told him to sharpie my frame since it is white and he got excited about so I let him go to town. He had if for about 3 weeks and since it is a Kona he found some Hawaiian themed markings and then we put 4 coats of clear over it and I built it up... So happy with it!!

Sweet looking bike. I have a 1992 trek 950 I'm working on. What kind of stem are you using? I like those panaracer mach tires; they look good on the bike.

I have a bike that needs 7 speed bar ends but I might want to go to 8 one day.

I'm thinking I'm just going to run dia compe friction bar end shifters and call it a day.

You could get 8s bar ends and just not use the top end gear. The spacing is close enough to work well. I did that on my Dirt Drop for a while - 7s cassette w/spacer and 8s STIs - until I got around to throwing on an 8s cassette.

I think 3speed may have an 8s bar end set he is willing to part with.

@ratfink76, as I was scrolling up through your photos I thought, "wow, looks like a tattoo artist went nuts on this bike with a sharpie." Then I saw the top of your post. That's a one-of-a-kind for sure!

Here's my latest MTB converted to drop bars for dirt/fire/logging/mining road touring.

I got the bike used for $40.00, the adapter stem for $12.00 new, the Tiagra aero brake levers NOS for $5.00 the pair and the 8 speed bar end shifters from a Cinelli Wing type aero bar with time trial extensions.

Here's the bike after it's shakedow ride today on single track and other harsh touring trails.

The stem is an Origin 8 road quill. The new stem will be the same model and color, just taller and less reach. The only thing that irks me about these stems, is the large gap in the clamp, even after it's tightened. I may make a filler plug, kind of like an 80's ATAX stem.,,,,BD

Otherwise a nice looking stem.

I think I am going to hit the bar end shifter pods with some satin black paint. Maybe even the shifters. That will leave the chrome base washers, and chrome button on the pivot bolt nut. Not sure what you call it, except it looks like half of a Chicago screw.

Just ordered two sets of Avid Shorty 4 canti's. I love that feeling of project underway, and parts ordered.,,,,BD


And then??? I promptly found out the (probably) original BB is frozen solid in the frame. A 1/2" impact wrench at 120psi, and even a 3 foot long breaker bar couldn't budge it a single millimeter. It's a cartridge, so I was getting pretty good grip on the socket. The plastic side spun the teeth out in one try. Guess it's either trash the frame, or heat it and ruin/repaint it.

I may try some PB down the seat tube, but I am not hopeful.

I have a marble painted Sante Fe frame, but the stem is some ridiculous one off size. I believe it is a 1 1/8 threaded, or possibly 1 1/4". The stem quill is like 26/28 mm. I have never seen another like it. fitting a drop bar on it will prove futile.,,,,BD

Game on! I whacked the end of the spindle a few times with a BFH for the hell of it, then tried the impact again. Spun right out like it was hand tight. There wasn't even rust on the threads or anything. Bizarre!

You might try gently heating the frame and at the same tme cooling the BB cartridge. I used a CO2 tire inflator once on a stuck cartridge and also heated the BB shell. That broke it loose.

I mentioned this a few posts back. 1984 Univega Alpina Uno frame, that I got from Thrifty Bill. I've been collecting the bits needed to make the frame into a bike, and finally got it as far as riding to the train station yesterday. I stopped on the way home and took this photo:


As you can see, I hadn't wrapped the handlebar yet. I hadn't mounted a rack on the front; and no lights.

Today I've been tweaking the build; different seat (and the original post; the earlier build had a different post).



The tires are Continental Speed King, very thin material, and I think pretty fast. Can't really tell yet. Fully 57 mm wide on Sun Levanter rims (almost as old as the frame).
Getting the cheesy Nashbar mini-rack to clear the fender and tire was a challenge; had to drill out a couple rivets, move some pieces around, reattach with metric bolts. But the little pannier set they sold with the rack makes it worthwhile.


The lighting system is kinda interesting. The wire from the dynamo (Shimano Alfine dynamo hub) goes into a box, made in China, that supposedly converts that AC current, whatever it might be, into the 5 volt DC that charges USB devices. You plug a standard USB cable into it at the other end. So that can power a light, charge a battery, run a GPS receiver, charge my phone, whatever. The headlight (note the classy attachment, it involves a zip tie) has a USB plug on it; I can run it off either a battery or the converter. The converter and the battery sit in the pocket of the pannier bag.

An interesting detail about this bike is that it takes a BMX or Cruiser headset. This is in keeping with the pedigree of early mountain bikes; they were derived from cruisers and BMX. The stem is 5/6", AKA 0.833", AKA 21.15 mm. This is a headset size that many of the members of this forum don't know about, and that (until very recently) included me. Alas, it had also included another former owner of this frame, who evidently tried to screw a French threaded headset onto the thread. So they're badly damaged. If this bike proves a keeper, a more expensive repair is going to be necessary.

As you can see, I have it set up more or less as a road bike. And as such, it rides pretty well. I haven't really ridden it yet, but I hope to put some miles on it on Monday.

Glad to see you getting this on the road. Looks swell and I think you have your winter, foul weather rider picked out. I like that pannier setup with lighting, looks serious !

The Univegas MTB's made for nice riding frames for many configurations. Is your serial # on the BB or headtube ?

Wish I could show mine( Alpina Pro) done but the project is stalled right now. I look forward to final tweeking reports and ride stories.

As it is this morning. Still waiting on the stem, and Avid Shorty 4 canti's. I will have to decide on an FD soon, but I think I have an XT from the Avalanche strip/trade last weekend. I used a steel fixed cup to chase the threads, it worked like a charm. The giga-pipe and cranks are installed.,,,,BD

Good choice IMO on the Avid shorty 4's. I use them on my uno cross Motorbacon.

The reach is too far out there unfortunately. My wrists are rotated downwards while I am on the hoods, and elbows close to locked. I am getting the same stem, just the taller version in a 80mm. This one is like 110 I believe? Bought for a short top tube road bike a few years ago. I read the reviews on the Shorty 4's, and was sold. Plus they have the black/silver look I am going for with the components. I also have a period correct Trek rack I may install in place of this one. It's been repainted and looks WAY nicer!,,,,BD

Do you have a pic of said QR post binder? I pulled the one off of this bike for the chrome Jamis. I installed it backwards to try and hide the ugly blue anodized cheapness of it.
