Mavic 55X hubs
Mavic GL 330 rims
Wheelsmith double butted stainless steel spokes
No spoke protector:

This stuff burns me up, if I had to guess I'd say at least 50% of all the bikes I've bought without spoke protectors have had chewed up drive side spokes. This wheelset is essentialy worthless in this condition. I mean seriously, where the heck and I suppose to get 8 double butted Wheelsmith spokes in this length? Nowhere. At least the *&@#%# wheels didnt cost me anything.

I think that's still a nice wheelset. Could it really be that hard to find the right spokes? It's got to be a pretty common size, and Wheelsmith spokes are relatively common. Besides, are the wheels really that unusable? Maybe for re-sale, but I'd still ride those. Put a 26t FW on there and you'll never see it. I'd try out the wheels and only replace if the wheel started to go untrue or spokes began popping. I'd be surprised if the wheel collapsed on anyone.
Or just spend a few bucks on some new spokes: https://www.jejamescycles.co.uk/cntry...tem185099.html

That'll buff right out
I suppose I've been lucky. I've done this only once myself, and have never had the misfortune to purchase a wheel treated in this way. I hope my luck holds, and I hope you find what you need to bring these back to respectability.

Personally I'd change the bad spokes, but if straight gauge spokes were cheaper/more readily available, I'd use them.

It's simple enough, though time-consuming, to replace the spokes, even de-stringing if necessary.

funny. I have GL330 rims with double butted weinmann spokes laced to 105 hubs and have been thinking about changing the hubs out for Mavics just like those.

So that's what spoke protectors are for. I'm curious, do any of you actually these these things? I've seldom used them but mebbe I should.

Yeah, I trashed a half dozen spokes myself last year. Phil Wood hubs, Fancy rims, I forget the brand but almost new. I had everything adjusted just right but the freewheel cracked and dumped the chain. Never had one do that.
Well I got a spoke wrench...

Those damaged spokes aren't the spokes that are stressed while under power. While they are cosmetically blemished they will not break where that damage is shown. 99.9 percent of all spoke failures are at the elbow. Never, I say NEVER do spokes fail in the main shaft unless more signaficant damage is done. I say ride them with confidence. If something breaks, so what? Any decent wheelbuilder with a spoke threading tool can give you any spoke you want. The usual disclaimers apply.

I figure if one spoke fails you still have 35 more (or 31 as the case may be). It's not like they are carbon wheels.

I think you started the mini-rant just to show off those cool wheels.
The miser in you resents having to spend any *&%&*( money on free (*&^&*^* wheels.
They belong where they can be fixed, and appreciated. Appears to me they are already there, my friend.
Nice point on the damages to spokes, though.
I've never given it a single thought when removing the disk.
Of course, now, I'll find damage on every set.

The Gran Turismo thread is talking about rear mechs spontaneously going out of adjustment and shifting themselves (seemingly!) into the spokes. When it happenned to me it was because I installed a rear mech late at night, checked shifting to the small end and called it a day. The next day I never dreamed I had forgotten to set the limit screw on the spoke end of the cluster. A dork disk might have saved the spokes, but is not the root cause of the problem.
