Hobby>Addiction>Affliction

When does your hobby become an addiction?
And, when does that addiction become an affliction?

For example:
Cinelli 66-38 bars.
These are the only bars I've ever used. I have 5 bikes with 66-38s on them. I've only destroyed two sets in my life and I'm still using the first set I ever purchased (in '83). Since they aren't manufactured anymore, I've been buying them when a good deal comes along. I got a set in the mail today and when I went to put them away this is what I found:

I'll never be able to use these in my lifetime.

Example #2
Brooks Pros
I only ride Brooks Pros.
I don't have the first one I ever bought, but I'm still using the second one. I've never had one wear out, but it looks like I'll need to replace one by the end of the year. Here's what was sitting in the same closet as my bars:

Example #3
My bedroom floor:

So, do I have a hobby, an addiction, or an affliction?
Do, I need to seek help?
Or, I'm I asking the wrong people?

You really can't have too many of those things.
Even if you can't use them up in your lifetime, they are sure to increase in value and provide financial security for your widow. Having more of these things only goes to prove what a good and caring husband you are.

Not married? NP.
With a hoard like that, every bonita chiquita will be after you someday!

I try not to think too much about this issue. I have more Brooks saddles than my wife has shoes...that's a problem.

I guees you are far from alone in this forum. But it's a proper question, when does it get a affliction.
One answer might be, when it impedes a full life. Or if the hobby is a way to escape reality.

My plan is also to buy spares for my favorites, but I think I will settle with one or two extra.

I do have a favorite handlebar and saddle. I have attempted to set up the majority of the bikes I have with the same. They fit, (totally understand the 66 bend, especially if you have big palms) You are adapted to them, why worry.
Not sure about that horn though...

I can't believe you asked those questions in this forum. I thought addiction and affliction were required to be here.

I guess you would offer a drink to a recovering alcoholic. Thanks, but I think I have enough.

The horn was a joke Christmas gift. I will probably mount it on a bike (as a joke) for a little while.

Was that directed towards me? How did you know? Which one of my friends have you flipped to spill the beans?

Seems like we share similar tastes... One day I looked at my collection of derailleurs and could not recall where all of these cyclone bits came from.

All joking aside, I think there is nothing wrong as long as you feel happy about it. It seems to me (as otherwise you wouldn't have asked the question) that at least you have some doubts. I also do not agree that these things raise in value over time. If you adjust for inflation, they maybe just keep their value.
Try selling a few items and see how that goes. Maybe you can find some joy in that.
