I recently acquired a CCM GT-101 Duomatic. It's going to need some work, but I think it'll be worth it given the duomatic hub and sporty angle of the frame. The previous owner said he thought it was about 45 years old, but I can't seem to find any information about this model, or CCMs in general. Anyone familiar with old CCMs?

Post us a picture! If the Duomatic is what I think it is (a 2 speed coaster brake system), I would date it at around mid to late 60's. I remember the 2 speed from when I was a kid, don't remember the GT model, though. The CCM bikes were to Canadians like Schwinn was to Americans, everybody had one and thought they were quality bikes. They also made hockey equipment, so CCM was a big name to Canadians. I don't know of any CCM collectors sites, but there's gotta be something out there!

In the U.S., I believe alot of folks refer to these Bendix transmissions as "kickbacks." Oldroads.com may have some data on when they were introduced (early 1960s, I think).

The "Duomatic" may also be a Sachs two speed coaster brake hub. There are two types. One is a kickback two speed, where shifting is accomplished by doing a "kickback" with the pedals. The other was a true automatic that would shift once the hub was spun at a certain RPM. "Duomatic" seemed to maybe have been a trademark for one or both of these types of hubs by Sachs.

Here's the CCM Duomatic (I hope the attachment works - I'm new at this). As you can see it's a ladies or girls model (I'd like to find the matching mens model if they made one). It has 26 inch wheels and an unusual angle to the front of the bike. The hub is a 2-speed kick-back type with the brand name "Tornado Duomatic" on it. CCMs were very common here in Canada - we all had one in the 60s - but I don't remember this particular model.

The two speed kick-back hubs that Schwinn used in the 60's were manufactured by Bendix. They have three grooves or depressions around the circumference of the center of the hub body that are painted either yellow or blue, depending on the model / year of manufacture.
45 years old would make that bike late 50's early 60's. From the looks of it, I'd say early sixties...

"Tornado" I haven't heard of. "Torpedo" on the other hand was used by Sachs (and still by SRAM).

I purchased a CCM GT-101 mans bike last summer at a garage sale . I have not been able to find out what year it is either . It cleaned up well . I put over 400 miles on it . It is a great bike . I made a few changes . I will try to post a picture .

Hi CCM stands for Canada Cycle & Motor Corp Ltd. They made bikes for years, still do and another branch, different company and owners, makes sporting equipment. Many NHL players use CCM skates and equipment. Anyway, the Duomatic was a special model made from middle or late sixties, can't remember exactly, until the middle seventies. The rear hub assembly was made in Germany and I attempted to buy another in 1978 or 9 and was told they were discontinued as the mfg could not meet the supply. It is a great bike and the one we have, purchased for our son in 1973 or 4 still runs and looks great. It has been hanging in the garage for roughly 30 yrs and is now for sale. Chrome rims and fenders still glisten. Alex Jackson

Interestingly, I have a CCM Mixte that is made from Reynolds 531 (straight gauge I'm guessing) sitting in my basement. I think it has a 21" (or maybe even 22") seattube, but don't remember. The CCM bicycles seem to be well made bicycles, of the hand-full I have seen.

Hi cleaned up the chrome, polished everything and the Dou-Matic looks almost like it did new, 1971 my wife says. Anyway, posted it on my local Kijiji yesterday and sold it this morning. No haggling, just handed over $200.00 bucks and went away happy. So after my last posting goof, I hope this turns out OK. Trouble getting the pictures in the right spot, but they are here.
