    Back door eBay advice...

I've talked a seller down on price from a bike on eBay. In order to get that price I need to not go through eBay or PayPal (fees). The seller has a 100% rating with 308 transactions as well as a German site through which he sells bikes (http://www.eisenherz-bikes.de/) so he seems legit. He's going to give me his bank info for me to deposit cash in. I'm just trying to figure out what sort of protection I have against theft, if any, or alternative methods to complete the transaction. Any thoughts?

Use PayPal, pay the extra 3%. Otherwise you have no recourse.

Zero protection, nada, zilch. Do you live in Germany? If not, do you think the German police will go get your money back if there is a problem? How someone treats buyers via ebay is meaningless.

The main thing you get from ebay is tremendous buyer protection. Buyers are king on ebay.

As a masters student, any money saved is much appreciated. I'll see if I can get him to sell the bike to me via PayPal, and just pay the 3.9% international fee. Thanks for the advice...

    +100

I've done this before. I made a best offer that the seller said he couldn't accept due to ebay's fees. He offered me the bike at my offer price for paypal gift or a money order.

The seller was knowledgeable, friendly, and trustworthy, but it was still well worth my money to spend an extra ~$15 to cover the fees on a $570 purchase (using the paypal purchase option instead of "gift"), just in case something went wrong.

DON'T do anything that is a gift or instant money transfer of any kind, unless you're not afraid of losing the money.

I did a similar purchase from a different seller in Germany recently. He had lots of positive ebay feedback, and he had a bike I had to have. It took a long time (6-8 weeks for the bike to clear customs with shipping) but I didn't have to pay any additional fees. I think bicycles might be exempt.

I took a leap of faith, but did use paypal. I bought the bike outside of ebay although it was originally listed on ebay. In addition, he has a professional looking website for his online store.

    YMMV.......
