Picked a good one off CL.... Super Sport
BF's
Had to share my bit of good luck with CL here as I have finally snagged a bike that I am quite proud of. A 1987 Schwinn Super Sport that has remained original and in very good shape.
I've been down in Jacksonville, NC visiting the folks when I decided to click on CL and do some searching. Wilmington was the closest site and the second entry on the list said " Schwinn bike and Huffy cruiser ". I hit all the Schwinn entries and got lucky this time. Emailed the seller and the SS was still available. He even said that I was the first to call, more were interested in the Huffy. Turns out he is in Shallotte, 86 miles away. I make the deal and swear to him I will be on the road tommorow. Sweat it out all night and by morning , we are off.
From the list of components he has told me, I can tell it is pretty much original, just didn't know what condition it would be in. CL's will always say, " Oh, great shape ! "
I get there and Barry, is true to his word. Held it for me and it is just in great shape. Pics that follow will show the bike AS FOUND, I did nothing to it. It came with a brand new Cateye Mity 8 computer, New{86.2 miles ] Conti ultra race tires, 80's voyeger saddle bag, bike tools and shoes that fit me, Performance 80's vintage. I ride a size 54 perfectly and this is a 56 cm so I was so happy to see this happen.
I hope you enjoy the pics while I finally clean it up now that I am back home and plan what group ride to show it off.
Once more, a shout out to RaleighSport for talking up the Schwinns to me and as always, you all for educating me and reading.

To me.. the older style group looks funny on there despite it being stock! I gotta say Mr 3 I love being able to look at your bike and see what could be with the actual correct era group. So is this the "go fast" bike now?

Aren't these frames made in the greenville Miss. plant ? That's what I thought and believe I read it somewhere. Somebody educate me, please. This was made on the 209th day of 1987. That would be July 29th, a bikeday is coming up !

Nice. I've been having a bit of nostalgia lately for that era Shimano 600 groupset.

my ironman has almost complete 600EX that I took from a 87 Super Sport and 84 Trek... I used the areo brakes levers (6208) from the Super sport but the friction-only derailleurs and shifters from the trek. My favorite group by far.. lightweight, looks great and everything works great.
the SS frame seemed to ride very similarly to the ironman so i'm sure you will enjoy your new bike

Thanks all,
I am looking forward to lots of miles for the rest off the riding season. I think this will definately be the bike I take on longer rides, group training days and at the MS Tour to Tanglewood.
This will be the first bike with a higher end groupo ( to me ) that I have owned. It will be great to see how they all play together as the designers intended.
I am really thrilled to be able to feel the Tenax tubing as it reacts to road vibration. I have really enjoyed the ride of the Cro-mo framed 87 Traveler I have as well. It will be interesting to compare the two. Less vibration and hashness from the road is very critical for me as it will not affect the reconstructed skull wraping around the brain these days.
Changing around a few things, bike is in the stand as the Tour is on the TV. Shifting is still sharp as I get use to the SIS system. Adjusting the fit between seat, seatpost height and stem rise was easy to do. Little concern as there seems to be rust discolouration on the stem when I was adjustin it. Both seatpost and stem came out no problem. There is no evidence of outside rusting on the frame but since it spent some of it's life down on the coast I worried.
Brakes needed to be tightened up. I saw the markings on the back rim and knew it would have to be done. PO was not a mechhead so thankfully he didn't go at it anyway. Simple turn of the allen wrench on the recessed bolt. Beyond him. He thought he wanted to ride but I guess this wasn't the type bike for him.
Inner tubes he had changed out were ment for deep V's. The valve stems are 60 mm. Changing out those and making sure the tire and valve are in the same orientation.
Back to the "work" Regards, 3 speedslow

No, don't think so. Happy to ride the S Sport, clean and fidget with it to get it just the way I want it. That and buy the tools needed to work on it. I think the headset requires a special wrench to open or tighten it.
Went on a group ride, first one on the Schwinn. 28 miles in 97 deg heat while chasing the fast crowd.... cooked myself to med well.
Time to sell a lot of pieces to projects. Some bikes too.

I'll defer to someone else's expertise, as I have none. The SS I had was an earlier one that was Tange tubing; pretty sure that one was a Panasonic. It would seem a bit strange to have a Pan. frame made of Tenax I suppose. The catalog says the fork blades on yours are Tange btw. Either way it's a very nice bike.
