Identifying a brand
Hi Folks. This is an early 1970's three-speed which has been spray painted. It has a Dreigang Tornado hub. Can anyone ID the bike's maker?

Tornado, or Torpedo? The hub is German, and the lugwork looks German, and I'm thinking it's a German bike; but can't remember the badge. I'm sure you would find the original decals etc under that repaint. The hub has a date code, which is a single letter; you can look up on the 'hubstripping' web site --something like www.hubstripping.com maybe.

Whoops, you're right. It's a Torpedo hub. Thanks!
Is there a way to remove to paint while leaving the original marks intact? I haven't fooled around with the paint on my old frames because it seems like too much of a hassle to do it well.

I've successfully removed spray paint with acetone (nail polish remover). Test it in a small area. Get the nail polish remover without any additives.

Acetone cleaned the head badge very well. It's an Austrian-made Sears bike.
