Thanks for all the replies. How tight should the fixing bolt be? and thanks for the link to the freehub cap.

The design pretty much keeps you from overtightening them, so the range is between so tight they won't move and so loose the cable shifts on it's own. It's easy to find on the R shifter, you tighten until they won't shift, then back off until they do. Pretty much the same on the L. Unlike STI's, indexed SiS shifters will downshift on their own if not tightened.

That's what I thought at first, too. But if you look closely, the two plastic caps are not the same. If the "SIS" is the 12 o'clock position, the right side lever has "FRICTION" in the 9 o'clock position while the left side has it in the 3 o'clock position.
I've never heard of downtube shifters that index the front before, but to me these don't look modified from what is shown on velobase... https://velobase.com/ViewComponent.as...98277&Enum=104

I was looking at velobase too because it had the clearest picture. I wish it showed the other side, The internals look similar on both sides on my levers. I based my comment of not looking like it had the loop adjuster on the front lever after seeing that velobase pic.

Cap that's on the L shifter may say friction, and may be different than the R shifter cap, but the base issue is that the L shifter doesn't index, and doesn't need that C-clip. It needs to be bolted on so the spring wants to pull it forward, and that's about it, tightened so it doesn't slip and set so it reaches full stop when aligned with the downtube.

ok so it says sis on the big chain ring and front derailleur. Would I be wrong to think that means it is designed to be indexed? I was just getting around to cleaning up all the parts and noticed this.
