A few more cut-outs. The first is a late 50's Masi Special, the second is a Maasi Prestige, the third is a Filter team bike built by Branca, the 4th is a Masi Prestige and the last is a cromovelato Agordina that was likely built Wilier

Waaay back on the second page @Drillium Dude stated that he hadn't seen a Pinarello BB drain hole. I cruised through, and didn't see one either but a lot of the pics are no longer linked.

None of my others have drain holes, except the already posted Colnago.

71 / 72 Witcomb WO-1

I swear this was not done by me! Have seen a few other Witcomb pics with the same large cutout.

okay, I'll admit that as an engineer, I see those square corners and think "stress risers".

The bike nerd in me just wonders if a vandal with a cutoff wheel attacked the bike.
Maybe to make it easy to overhaul the BB???

The more practical side of me wonders why...?? If a framebuilder aspires to be consider as a craftsman, why hack out a plain rectangle out of a BB shell? Why not some simple slots? Why not some other interesting geometrical design? Why not get a punch made so that a lovely "W" could be punched out, similar to how Masi did their "M"?? (not that there wouldn't be plenty of stress risers with a W too... but engineering wasn't anywhere near their first priority when people were busy hacking holes in their frames)

Steve in Peoria
(and I'm probably not giving enough weight to the desire to be able to write "BB cutout" in the manufacturer's brochure)

Steve- Sure is odd but again, I've seen other images of Witcomb (UK) with the same. Regarding quality, its pretty well known what was defined as quality by many British products in the day. The seat lug shoreline on this particular bike is also rather funny. Who cares, its all character?! Lifting a pint-

I've owned my share of bike boom Raleighs, so I'm familiar with "character".
I appreciate that you shared this quirky detail of your Witcomb, though. Nice to get a look at the variety of what was going on at that time.

In the interest of fairness, I need to share a shot of my Olmo's BB shell. It's the only one of my bikes with anything other than a solid shell. Not sure how to describe the shape of the cutout. A typical lateral slot, but with an extra triangle notched out on the forward edge. Clearly, there's no practical reason for that extra notch, other than to help channel rain water into the bearings.

Here's the gloriously imperfect heart cutout on my '73 De Rosa.

The cutout on my Montello looks like the one SJX426 posted except without the paint, but my recently sold Pinarello Gran Turismo had a different look.

1975 (or thereabouts) Presto Amsterdam. The three X's are borrowed from the coat of arms of the city of Amsterdam.

This is the most obscene thread I've seen in this respectable forum.
"Drain Holes", "Bottom brackets" and other low parts.
Aren't you ashamed?

Nope - in fact, I'm thinking of doing an even lower-hanging component next: "rear" derailleur

I picked up this Pinarello a few days ago, have just started to investigate what year it is, so interesting that yours is an '89. Are you the resident Pinarello expert, Old Yeller? Can I PM you?
I am no expert. I eventually nailed mine down as a 90 or maybe 91. I learned a lot over the years trying to find an exact match with date so PM me if you like.

Drain plug for when this 1964 Cinelli Speciale Corsa makes its routine visits to Jiffy Lube -

Its 74mm shell requires "an extra quart"

Owner always specifies "full synthetic please"...
