    broken handlebars anyone? need parts

OK ok this might sound bizarre...

the other day I noticed that the sleeve is slightly loose when I adjusted my bars angle.

hmmmm this gives me an idea.

I have Buckets of no-name bars in the shed, nothing wrong with them-just undesire-able.

the 24" bikes have 33 or 34cm bars.....

Now If you have a clean center sleeve from a broken bar and no use for it I would like to have it to try my hand at shortening.

    my method is as follows.
remove the center sleeve from the broken bars intact.

cut the donor bars in the correct place-remove old sleeve
make a center from an aluminum tube that just fits inside the bar,

tig weld the bar back together-penatrating the tube-grind flush and then slide the sleeve over it the weld but using structural epoxy under a vacuum to pull it in the joint.

ALAN's are held together by epoxy- I am pretty confident this will work.

I will be happy to write a good thread about this.

I need a set, and I know a few fellow forumites could use a few pairs for their kids.
I would like a center sleeve from a 3ttt, or cinelli.

this is what I got now!

So the goal is a sub-standard width Cinelli bar?

buy a new heat treated bar for your reduced injury potential safety..

non heat treated bars sag over time as rider weight bends it a bit with every bump in the road.

Bike Friday splits bars, has a sleeve inside the bars, to span the center cut,
then has a external sleeve over the handlebars.. the stem clamps all 3 layers.

i had 2 identical narrow Sekae Rando bend bars,
i cut each at opposite ends of the center sleeve.

then re combined them with a custom made stem which has a 4" wide face plate with 2 clamps of 4 bolts each, on the ends.
to have a 42 wide tops bars from 2 36 wide tops bars..

this gained some setup simplicity for boxing the bike for air travel..

I had 2 AlAns, they had lug cracks develop over time
as the metal fatigue /flexing cycles added up.

If this works out, there may be wider market for it...
