Standardized Table of C&V Answers

A real time-saver: Any time a question comes up, refer to this handy table. You can thank me later!

- Post some pics, please.
- Check Sheldon’s site.
- That’s too good a bike to convert to fixie!
- Seller is deluded. It’s worth $200, tops.
- Velocals has the decals you need.
- Regrease the bearings.
- Models varied greatly from year to year.
- Look at “completed auctions” on eBay.
- It isn’t a PX10.
- Use oxalic acid.
- I guess you’ll just have to open it and see.
- Check for serial numbers under the BB.
- DON’T REPAINT IT!

Did I forget anything?

"It's worth what you paid."

^ offered in the "what's it worth" section by a few particularly unhelpful people...

Now that you have a good list started you can figure out the macro commands for us so we don't have to type these out.

A revision I'd suggest, "Pics or it didn't happen"

1. Make offers in person, in cash.

2. Look harder (if you want a great deal).

3. Check date codes, serial numbers are often useless.

Replace the rims with alloy
Kool Stop pads
Brooks B-17
Yes, you can commute with that
Look for an 80s Japanese Sports tourer with alloy rims
Take photos of the drive side

"What year is this Raleigh?" => Does it have a Sturmey-Archer rear hub (and/or GH6 front Dynohub)? If so, check it for a two-digit date code. Also check the frame for a serial number and verify said number against the following charts.

Another classic:

- Your Raleigh isn't from the '30s. It's from the '70s.

How about:

Another Peugeot U-08. In "as-is" condition, $50-$60. In refurbished, ready to ride condition, $140-$160.

It's not a special rare Shimano SIS, it's a BCA!

A threadless stem doesn't belong on a C & V bike, period!

Pre 1980 French bikes, for the most part, only take French components, so if you need to find a missing component, other than brakes, bring a hefty wallet or a buy a spare French bike.

The seat clamp is backwards.
That splash bar tape has to go.
That's not a cassette, that's a freewheel.

No, it's not worth upgrading unless you're getting parts from a donor bike.

It's a good deal but only if it fits you.

It's a good price for a keeper but not for a flipper.
