    Ready to roll with a Raleigh

    that's a beauty. nice work on the fenders. and you're almost there. all's needed is dt shifters (or bar-ends), red fizik tape, gum or brown hoods, a rack independent of the seatpost, and a red or black bottle. then it would be ready for the centerfold.

    Very nice looking Raleigh you have built. I agree with the bar tape, I never liked the foam covers in the 70's and that would look truly classic with a nice tape job. Not a slam, just a suggestion.

    Sorry to reply to an old thread. Nice looking bike.

    I just bought an identical frame/crank/fork. I plan to built it either as a fixie or use a Sturney Archer 3-speed.

    How did you make that support on the seat post? It looks like you used a stem and I an interested in the rest of the supporting system.

    I'll chime in here 'fore the owner does. The attachment you see on the seatpost is prob-ly a production rack that you can purchase from places like Nashbar or performance, and the likes.

    My vote for your build, 3 SPEED !

    Thanks, 3speedslow! Now I see. I actually have one of these. I initially thought it was a threadless stem and the OP made something out of it.

    I am also leaning toward 3 speed. Now I have converted all but two bikes to 3-speed hubs. I have quite a few SA and Shinmano 3-speed hubs now.

    Just finished a 1981 Fuji Gran Tourer SE to a Shimano 3-speed coaster brake hub (3SC). This Raleigh Olympian frame is also considered a touring frame.

    No problem, happy to be of assistance.

    I've used both SA and Shimano hubs too. Liked them both, though only have one bike with the Shimano 333 now. It does coffee duty at my in-laws when we visit. DSC00398.jpg Here as a commuter bike. A little too hilly and not willing to change the back cog out so off it went.

    Nice bike and I think I have a saddle just like that.

    I personally have no problem with the Shimano 333 hubs. Have two bikes with that and they are smooth. I also have a few later cartridge models and one 3S (with a positron shifting system) and they are also very nice but without the oil ports.

    One of the hubs I got came with a 20 tooth cog and that was a huge improvement over the 18t. With the 20t, the 3rd gear is good for flats (still a little bit high but I can ride on flat), then 2nd is for small hill or when I am tired, 1st for steep climbs. You may want to try one out and they are very inexpensive.

    Very nice, Love the contrasting red head tube.
    Vintage Raleigh designers knew how to add a touch of class.
