Making 126 spaced rear hub a 120 spaced hub for a 5 speed wheel
Greetings. I want to use a 126 spaced (6/7 speed) rear wheel on a five speed bike. Can I simply install an axle appropriate for a 120 spaced rear wheel and redish the wheel? I've got Nuovo Record large flange hubs, so I am assuming I just need to find an axle for 120 spacing, remove a spacer and redish. Is there anything else to it? Thanks in advance!

Depending on the bike I would try see how the wheel mounts before you do a lot of work in many cases while a a little tight 126mm wheel will mount up fine. In that case you can run either 5 or 6 speed freewheel. If you do need to change the axel or spacing in most cases you won't need to change the dishing much or at all. So my advice is try to fit the wheel as is or with only slight spacing change before you go to a lot of trouble changing the axel and dishing because it may not be necesarry.

op, i agree with your assumptions, but you may not need to redish the wheel. just use a 130mm axle, space the hub for 120mm, adjust it, install a 5-speed freewheel, and mount the wheel. see how it spins, and ride off into a happy ending.
