@leegf just bought an Olmo on eBay from someone in Italy and had me tune it up. I'll let him post the pictures, which he hasn't shot yet. I still have it, though. I should test ride it before I hand it back.

This is interesting. As is often the case with these things, it's located in Italy, but the seller ships to "tutti il mondo."

This is our modified Peugeot M46, the Mixte version of the Peugeot C46 boy's bike. As you can see, it has been re-imagined as a single-speed townie. I know not many will agree but I, for one, think it's better that way. The original components (some of which have been retained) were fairly crappy, and the bike shed a lot of weight.

Nice. What is the length of those crank arms? They look long-ish for that frame.

I like the townie set-up. I think any 24" set up will be rider-specific. imho, anyway.

That's a very good looking mixte! And you shoot really good pictures.

Single pivot brakes require more hand pressure than other types, so pay attention to whether your wife is happy with them. Dual pivots are easy to install and are easier to actuate.

I see there is a lot of clearance around the wheels, so if she rides in the wet, she might like it if the bike had fenders.

And where DOES one find fenders for a 24" wheel frame? Just curious, 'cause it's a great idea.

Is there a decent primer or introductory source of information about the range of specs of these bikes?

Besides brake levers, bars, 3,4-speed freewheels, and the hunt for wheel sets in general, what other key details does one need to learn?

Some of the bikes shown here are truly marvelous! Thanks for all the photos.

My interest?

I have a girl in the market for an 18" and two boys ready 20+", but not yet 24".
Regarding a primer, Tony Oliver discussed design considerations for small bicycles and frames in his book, "Touring Bicycles."

If you look at the bikes here, especially the blue Peug Mixte single shown on Page 8 of this thread (or maybe later), you can see a few features Oliver mentioned - high-looking BB, needs to be set based on ground clearance with a crank length, and with down tube/front wheel clearance in mind. Also affected by down tube is the head tube angle. You can see on the Peug that it is well laid back. It might have had bigger wheels to begin with, since the wheel clearances to look quite large.

On the Merckx on the first page of the thread you can see that the seat tube is quite laid back. This specification might just be Eddie's style, or it could be to establish enough reach to cockpit, or ... ? Chainstays can also become long to accommodate panniers, wheel-seat tube clearance, and possibly fore-aft weight balance.

Pivot brakes apply lateral and twisting forces to seat stays. A seat stay bridge near the brake pivots (CP, canti, or V) can help the rear Cps or cantis to respond firmly without added mush due to frame flex.

Do the math on the components, and the price makes more sense. Still high for a junior bike, but the Dura Ace crank must be very hard to source, eh?

Darn cute, but the kid better be really into biking!

ymmv, of course.

Well, I got another one. I saw this thing and it was This one's a 20-inch, not a 24, so it's even smaller than the Olmo Here's a quick snap on ye olde dumbphone- I'll get better photos once it has pedals (note: does anyone have a pair for sale?), fresh bar tape, etc.

I am pretty sure I am using these little things as proxies for full size bikes since they're only a fraction of the cost and take up less space in my small apartment

Those are 20" wheels? 440 (500A) or 451's? What's standover for that? We have a "Junior Professional" with 540 tubulars, the 9 y.o. daughter was unbeatable on it. Then a framebuilder friend of ours built her this- and there's no going back: 19 mph avg for 20 miles

Sorry to say, but I don't know for sure. The Nisi rims don't say, and if the Vittoria tubulars ever did, they don't anymore since the lettering wore off. With the tire inflated, the diameter measures just over 20" from end to end. Standover is a shade under 25.5".

More photos here.
