moto grand record redux (more pics!)

the major facelift (and probably last) of my grand record is finally complete!

before (what was i thinking?) ...

and after ...

the redux included ...

- exchanging all the leather for a black brooks special (mounted on a new campy record seatpost) and red fizik tape.
- a cinelli stem and bars replaced the 3ttt combo.
- all the suntour cyclone gt gearing was sold, with campy record derailleurs and shifters now driving a new ird 5-speed.
- new tektro dual-pivots replaced the ugly, poor fitting ird calipers.
- cane creek aero levers with their wide, comfy hoods replaced the old non-aero dia-compes.
- the 48/42t half-step rings made way for this beautiful sugino 52/42t set.
- vo touring pedals replaced the original atom 600s.
- the crown race was milled to standard size to allow for a super record headset.
- finally, continental sport 1000s replaced the hard riding michelins.

the bike now offers a completely different ride. it feels more spirited, quicker, and far more comfortable. it's again found a spot at the top of my small stable. i'm considering being buried with it. a few more pics ...

it's chinatown, jake...

and on the way home on elliott bay...

three bf'ers helped by sending me the stem, bars, tires and rd. many thanks, fellas. (you know who you are.)

thoughts? criticism? i'm still working on perfecting my bike photos (with my limited equipment and patience). got tips?

enjoy your final days of summer, good people.

Looks like a really beautiful redux you have done to the Moto. Lots of well thought out components and the quality is all right down the middle of the strike zone. You should try to do a drillium on the outer ring of the crank set is the only criticism I could find, but that is personal taste and up to what you want the bike to be and do. Congrats!

Great facelift.

Never mind the drillium, why did you swap out the Cyclone stuff?

bill, thanks. you know how accidents happen? sometimes you kind of end up with them. this was the third combo of chainrings i tried. i first went the campy nr route, but it just didn't look right. i shopped and shopped for sr rings, but couldn't find any for my price range. then i found this nos sugino 52, put it on the bike, and was stunned by the change in appearance one ring can make. the drilled 42t was just an accident (after a black one that looked awful), as i couldn't find a matching ring thereafter. but i really like it this way with only the inner ring drilled. (i'm not a huge fan of drillium.)

brox, i recently built up an old falcon with campy nr gearing and fell in love. i love the low weight of the cyclone gt, but it just doesn't perform as well for me on this 14-28t freewheel. that suntour fd is about as good as it gets, but i didn't lose much with this late gen nr fd. got real lucky with this pristine ebay find ($15!) after trying a couple that didn't work as well.

also, i noticed on ebay that the cyclone gt stuff in good nick is really pricey. so i sold the group on cl, which gave me 50 percent more than the campy replacement group cost and helped offset the total cost of the new components. i don't know why the cyclone rd is more than twice the price of a campy nr rd. should be the other way around.

If you like the rings you have, you should keep things that way!! The bike is gorgeous and you have great taste in components. That was just an aside, it is so good I actually cannot think of anything I would change given the chance to own one like it. The paint is what caught my eye, I like the classic panels and the head tube in the contrasting color like the 60's-70's bikes had so often. I repainted my Raleigh International in a royla blue metalflake with white panels and head tube, because it is what I thought looked good.

You did well, sir!!!!!!

Nice update of a classic.

I'll have pics of my own finished (for now ) GR up soon. I made some similar choices to you, including the red Fizik tape, a black Brooks (Team Pro) and aero levers, but Tektros for me, closing the original Weinman calipers.
