Specialized Expedition
Very fortunate find. I was trying to get a Miyata 610 and this popped up.
Nubs still on the original tires garage queen. L series serial number. 40 spoke super champion in back. Suntour mechs.
Does anyone have information on using the internal wiring running from the top of the down tube to the bottom bracket? I would eventually like to run a son hub up front.
I am not sure if the current wiring would help get power to the back or perhaps be used as fish tape to run a new wire to the back.

Nice find. I have one that appears to be the same year, but not nearly as nice as yours. I am curious about the wiring as well. Enjoy yours, the ride is plush.

I believe the original internal wiring was designed to be used with a Sanyo Dynahub style roller generator that attached under the BB where the kickstand is. These were very similar to the NH-T10 Sanyo generator still available through Peter White Cycles
I think the wire routing wouldn't really do you any good for a SON hub. Best to leave the original wiring in place and just add external wiring for the SON. The SON will work very much better than the Sanyo anyway!

I think the consensus is that the "Special Series Touring" frame material was an Ishiwata set.
FWIW- I have an 84 Stumpjumper Sport- it's got a heavier frameset than the average bear. I'm aware of that. However, whenever I see one of the 'battleship grey' old Specialized bikes- I immediately think "wow what a beautiful, full-on 'business' bike that is- too bad it's a tank" just because of my Stumpjumper. I have no idea how much one of those beautiful Expeditions weigh- I'd imagine pretty much exactly the same as my Trek 720.

Great find on the bike. I'd love to find one of them in my size. I've run both Sanyo and Soubitez BB mount generators and your bike was set up with the Sanyo in mind. Sanyo came out a couple of years before the Soubitez. Soubitez's mounting bracket was designed to be used with or without a kickstand. Sanyo was not, but we modded several bikes so they could be so used. See the installation on mine, hung below the kickstand using a old Schwinn Stik-Shift handle as the bracket. I have not used one of the new hub generators, but it sounds like a great old idea reimagined with new technology.

Current state of this bike (and still has not seen a tour yet, damn). I have been using it to travel in a rough (socially and pavement wise) part of town.
The schwalbes are about bullet proof and the bike carries whatever I need (photo gear) for the trip.

That seat stay cluster with the cable hanger- love it.
I'm so glad you're still riding it. As much as people will say "those bikes need to be toured," they're such outrageously comfortable bikes- I have no problem just riding them for "everyday" riding.

This is a beautiful bike. I'd be tempted to use it as an everyday rider perhaps even more than as a tourer just because it's so beautiful. I tend to tour on bikes I don't mind beating up but that's just me.

I was very sad the one I found last year was too small. They do seem to be very sought after. The frame I had was very nicely built, you can still see pics here if you want to drool some more, should have probably held it for trade longer than I did-- but last nights impulsive t-700 ebay bid probably makes up for it! Need an intervention over here......

My '85 model was purchased as a repainted frame only so I like to see photos of the originals. It is amazing how closely this was spec'd to the 84 Miyata 1000 - even the same basic color.

I did not like the font and do not plan on resale. Off they went. And although it was a garage queen I hope to use it as a tourer when life allows so while I am careful with my rides finish is second to experience.
I am surprised at how many folks recognize it as an Expedition when I ride it even without the decals. They sure have a following.
