^ha - whatever mtnbke alluded makes me want to get one of these brakes. Have never actually seen one, but they have that over-engineered look. Take one for the Americans.

I wouldn't be concerned about asbestos fibers. Pressed asbestos doesn't pose much of a risk unless it is broken or ground up. If they strip while you are braking, asbestos fibers will not be the most important problem you face at the time...
As Jeff Wills said, the threads are standard (English) freewheel threads. No idea if a drum would would work.
