You know what, a regular sized sedan takes up as much space as 8 or more bicycles. Ever thought of selling the car and replacing them with 8 Paramounts, Tommasini, Colnagos, etc. ?

It's much greener for the environment and you would be just as happy!

As a matter of fact, yes. I'm gradually going "car light" (rather than car-free). I'm driving less and cycling more. My wife and I have two cars. She has a 1998 Honda Civic hatchback, which is nice for the city. Its small size makes it easy to park. And it has tons of room for such a small car, thanks to the hatchback. Hatchbacks rule.

I have a VW Passat wagon. It's very nice for long trips, which we take often. It has tons and tons of room for people or cargo or both. I have a roof rack. I also have a rear rack which I haven't used yet. I might start using it because the fuel cost and the wind noise of the roof rack are annoying. One day, I took an entire day to pick up used bikes on craigslist. I went as far as Hartford. I didn't use the rack that day. I managed to fit seven bikes INSIDE my car. Imagine if I had used racks as well.

But it's wasteful for commuting and shopping. It gets an average of about 22 mpg.

I'm trying to figure out how to get by with only one car. I go to rehearsals every week, 23 miles away. I'm going to cycle the distance one day, but I can't do it every week. And there are other times when we're both driving. The trick is to avoid being in that situation. I'm considering getting a motorcycle, but I'm not sure about how I'd like to ride that in the rain or when there's snow or ice on the ground. Probably not.

We should get a Prius or something similar when we eventually get down to one car, which we will do eventually.

Anyway, I'm tired of the low end bikes. I was flipping bikes for a couple of years, but I don't want to do that any more.

I sold a bunch of bikes during the summer, it is really nice to have the space and, even though I thought I would miss them, I don't.

Yes, I too have made a similar decision.... My wife and I are planning a trip to Italy for 2014, and I have gotten the go ahead to do L'Eroica !! I will therefore be selling many of my bicycles to fund that effort !

That will include several recent purchases.....oh well, L'Eroica will certainly be worth it !
I will sell off my lower end bikes too....the goal will be to get down to "The" bike, plus 1 all-arounder !

They will probably all go via eBay, since I want to try and maximize the funding for the trip.
1897 Union, 1913 Mead, 1902 Pope Columbia chainless, Torpado, Fiorelli, Frejus, Bottecchia, Legnano, Bianchi, Italvega, Univega, Team Miyata, Somec, Dancelli, Clamont, and a few others too.....all gonna go within the next 6 mos. !

Time to get down to what I really want and become one with "The Bike". Time to focus !

Cheers,

Joe

I too, am selling many off the fleet over this coming winter season.

We are going back to Tuscany twice in the next year and I want a super solid war chest for "the" bicycle as well.

So hard to decide which ones have to go.

I gave all of my worldly possessions to my son. I just did this yesterday. Since he's only 3 i have to take care of them for him until he's of age.

Just did that recently. I sold my track bike, bianchi and even my centurion. Trouble is, I picked up two bikes to fill their places already (Litespeed Tuscany and Pricipia Rex Pro)

I've been having these thoughts. I've often owned an interesting car, but could never justify the cost or space consumption to own more than one cool car at a time. My last one was a 1970 Porsche 914/6, which I sold to a guy in France about a year ago. I went through a period thinking about buying a 911SC or something similar, with the intention of someday converting it to electric power.

Then it occurred to me that I
  • live in a cold climate,
  • have an unheated garage which never seems to be cleared of enough other stuff to make proper room for working on a car
  • love to ride bikes,
  • enjoy working on them,
  • really love the steel stuff,
  • have enough space in my (cluttered) basement for a nice cozy little workspace,
  • the prices of bikes, parts and paint jobs, while growing, are nowhere near as expensive as the corresponding car stuff

We have a very basic Toyota Matrix. I could care less about it. Keep it full of fresh oil, tires and brakes and it should run just about forever. I could care less about it getting damaged, don't care if I ever work on it myself, save a bit on insurance. Hey, life is good...

Skip

Tom, you can fit 7 bikes in the Passat.....just keep 7 bikes in there. Voila, space problem solved. Its like those Russian Nesting Dolls but you know...not.

You should find the person you sold that Fuji Professional to like 4 years ago and get it back and sell it to me. I'll store it in your Passat.

I like to have bikes for different purposes. This has resulted in a modest collection of 6 bikes. But to be truthful, I probably could get it down to 3 and still be content, and one of those is just an errand bike.
