Dyeing Brooks leather bar tape??
Hi all!
So I got some snazzy new Brooks Honey leather bartape, had it taped up, rubbed Brooks profide all over it and massaged it into the leather.... and man it looks amazing!! I'll post a pic when I get home from work! The profide really gave it that rich dark brown color i was looking for!
Here's the problem though.... with the Honey Brooks Pro saddle, the bike is just to matchy matchy now and I just don't like it. So instead of trashing $80 worth of beautiful leather, I want to dye it a lot darker brown. Has anyone done this before?? I googled millions of ways to dye leather, but my concern is that those methods aren't usually for something you're going to be handling alot, and might come off on my hands.
Just look for any insight... I'll probably end up taking it to my local shoe repair guy and have him do it.

You applied proofide, which is a sealant. You can't dye it now and really should not bother. Don't be so concerned with bike fashion. If it bugs you, spray a little water on either the saddle or tape. It will darken further.

I agree with the three posts above. However, if you're dead set on this, get yourself some Fiebing's oil based leather dye, sold in leather working catalogs. Melt a bit of Proofide and mix dye in with the melted dressing. Let cool and apply. No guarantees. Just an idea off the top of my head.

Ride it as is for a year, Honey will look Brown soon enough.

It will darken and change as you use it. The more you ride it, the more it will change.

if you used some sort of sealer use acetone to remove it then redye with feibings oil dye when done with dyieng use some leather conditioner. reapply the sealer if you want to.
