I got a Winchester bike for my 13th B-day. My first 10-speed, I think it was a made in Japan, lugged steel, possibly cro-mo frame but maybe not. I think I remember it being lighter than the Sting-Ray it replaced, despite being a much bigger bike.

I sort of get nostalgic thinking about that old bike (my first 'real' bike) and all I have to remember it by is the old Unicanitor knock-off plastic saddle I thankfully saved. It's still my very favorite combo of smooth hard plastic and flex perfect for my 190lb ass. I've used it on at least a half a dozen bikes that have passed through my hands over the last 37 years.

If you have a Winchester of that era, pls post a photo. If you have anything to say about the history of 70s era Winchesters, that'd be interesting too. Searching the googles shows very little about this brand, apart from the old prewar heavyweight cruisers.

Dam, I was just going in the closet to get my Antique Winchester 94, which I purchased back in the 70s.

I have a Model 190, and it may even be from the 60's, but I'm thinking '71 or '72.

Bicycles, people!

This was intended as a Winchester *bicycle* thread on a *bicycle* forum. Don't make me call down to the principal's office!

Obviously more people here own Winchester guns than bikes. Never seen one. They must be quite scarce, eh? Was this one of the gun company's forays into other things, like their wood chisels, tools, etc?

How about this old Winchester, which is made by Windsor..?

I might add that this bike is, in no way, affiliated with the gun guys.

Browning Arms imported a line of bicycles in the seventies, but quit after the bike boom fizzled. I've never heard of a Winchester branded bicycle.

There is a linkage between Browning and Winchester; Browning designs have been the basis for many of the models manufactured by Winchester, Colt, Remington, Stevens, and Fabrique National (FN) of Belgium.

Here's a 70s Browning bicycle.

I have a Browning like above in yellow and a Mossberg that were made by other sources in the early 1970s bike boom era. Never seen a Winchester. Roger

Guns <-> Bicycles
Huffy produced artilery components
Miyata was originally a gun manufacturing company
The afore mentioned Browning (I wasnt aware Mossburg was involved in bicycles)

However, they make/made some of the nicest 120 thread count cotton T shirts I've ever seen. Winchester never made undershirts as far as I know. But I have some beautiful old wood chisels made by them. What this has to do with bicycles... I dunno.

So I saw this thing on CL and was trying to figure out what the heck it is... and I guess I came across a good reason to revive an old thread:

I would suspect at that point, probably not. It's possible that the brand name was still being applied to bicycles manufactured by someone else during the 1970's. The period when they really were hot and heavy manufacturing all the really random stuff was mostly during the interwar period, before they were bought out by Olin.

BSA= Birmingham Small Arms

I still have a Winchester 190-bought mail order in 1964-delivered by US mail- I was 13 yo-probably lied about age-or had my mother sign it(little fill in order form cut out of magazine)
Wish I was less of a cheapskate and paid $10 more ($52 instead OF $42) and gotten the better stock and finish-guess I didn't look 50 years on.

Try not to take the wags and jesters too seriously; I myself am guilty of taking the obvious joke and running with it all too often on these threads.

But speaking as the OP, thanks for posting the ad! The better than average pictures have filled in several blanks in the sepia-toned memories of my First Real Bike. Apart from the seat, and color, that bike appears to be a larger version of exactly the bike I had. If I was closer to Camas, I'd call the guy up and see about a test ride, for old time's sake.
