Who has a Raleigh Competition GS with original fork? Need measurement please.
I have had a replacement fork on my 1980 Comp GS since I got the frame (WM0001946), oh about 1984 or so. Not a perfect match but near enough, it's a 531 fork with Campy dropouts and darn close to the same rake, near as I can tell. All these years I wanted to get it chrome plated, and I'm finally going to do it.
What I would love to have is the favor of telling me where the paint ends and the chrome begins, from the edge of the crown down would be easiest since it's a straight measurement. This is so I can reproduce the factory look after plating.
It may not be 'correct' but it'll look a lot better than the bark brown that it is now.
Sincere thanks,

Did you see that NOS Comp GS frame on eBay? Beautiful.

I'm not finding a NOS Comp GS frame on Ebay - can you post a link?
I measured from the top edge of the fork blade (the flat 'shoulder' of the crown) to the top of the chrome: 4.5 inches.

Another fantastic bike. Has there been a 'Show me your Competition GS' thread? (too lazy to look).
LOVE the leather bar wrap...had that, on mine, at one point. Even saved it when I removed it...but that was long ago and it's since disappeared. Know of a modern source?

I have the original drop bars, but prefer the moustache bars. The wrap is a modern cork/gel tape coated with amber shellac, which matches the saddle pretty well and is really very durable. I might go for Brooks leather wrap, but I read that it faded to an ugly gray. The elk hide is more reasonably priced and looks good too, maybe not as "period" but a nice color if it doesn't fade. Long ago I replaced the rock-hard Brooks Pro saddle with a comfortable B17.

Quick FYI, here's how it turned out...
Still have to get the 531 stickers (it's a Trek 531 butted fork from an circa 1983-4 bike, from when I mechanic'd at the LBS).
Powder coated the black ($15 woohoo)...looks better than the frame! And a lot better than the tree bark brown it used to be.
Thx again for the help,
Ron

Looks great! The PC even seems to match the paint pretty well, at least from the pic.

Q: Could you tell me the length of the top tube center to center?
A: 42 1/2 inches... center of headset to center of seat post.
Say what?

Thanks!
The bars keep the Benotto Cellotape and Velox plugs just like I rode the bike when it and I were pups. (OK I was 23, the bike was about 3). Might try to do a two-color criss-cross pattern like some of the guys did back in the day - haven't seen that treatment in quite a while.
The hoods...after I find a set of period correct DA levers, I'll add them and get the right hoods, removing the Superbe levers I have now. Oddly, I don't really mind riding hoodless.
