I read the book and I found it quite entertaining. He visits all the great cycling artisans in search of the best for his ultimate bike. Good stuff.

I'll have to make some time to watch this. Thanks!

Very enjoyable programme. Thanks for posting the link. I wonder why Rob didn't opt for a Titanium frame??

My buddy gave me the book for christmas last year, great present! read it in one go, love it. The documentary is also very good. Rob Penn is such an enthusiastic advocate - literally, he used to be a lawyer - for the invention we all love so much.

If I hit the jackpot (or find a magazine/publisher to buy the story!) I'm going to do the same - travel the world for all the bits of my dream bike. If I do, some members, notably one in Bellows Falls (frame) and one soon to be in Diego Garcia (drillium chainrings), can expect a visit

New steel can be as light as titanium and offer a suitably stiff ride. Also, Ti does not have the same kind of "pop" as steel in my opinion and there are not as many people working with it. That said I have never ridden a lightspeed arcon which could change that opinion.

I think his choice had as much to do with who was building the frame as it did with material itself.

When I say "new steel" I am defining it as oversized and custom shaped tubing that is thinner and lighter than traditional tubes benefiting from the improved metallurgy, tig welded with modern conveniences like 1-1/8" head tubes.

I read the book too and found it enjoyable as a bike nerd. I borrowed off a friend who had yet to read it and told her to lower her expectations when I gave it back and that she might find it quiet borrow. She loves her bike (a 1985 miyata 610 which I refurbished for her) but is by no means a bike nerd.

I read the book, I liked it but had to wonder why he chose a carbon fork after praising and choosing steel for the main frame.

My dream bike?

call me stupid,
I take my size 54 AD ultima frame I just picked up, de-chrome it, pull it apart lug by lug.
use the newest lightweight reynolds tubing and build it back in exactly my size,
chrome it and paint it-with some chrome showing.

-a 50th anniversary group,
-how about some custom TI skewers that look like early 80's S.R.(the SR skewers are actualy very heavy
-some panto on the chainwheels and stem.
make some custom brifters with gum colored hoods and silver levers
this could be fun but it is too much of a dream!

Ah, since you listed yours (and I like your taste in puchs!) I'll do mine. I spend many idle hours designing it in my head

-Columbus spirit frame (TIG welded) 57/55 with 73 deg. HTA and 74 deg. STA. Steel fork (chrome!).
-Campy 10 speed titanium-alloy record (no ugly carbon please!). Maybe some drillium.
-Cinelli 1R/Top 64 combo (no threadless)
-Sleek Selle Italia saddle (either a modern one or a flite) on a nice, pretty alloy post.
-Wheels: Royce hubs with some light tubular rims and dugast tubes
