Torque For Shimano BB-UN55 Bottom Bracket?

Replacing the spindle on my 80s UNIVEGA with a Shimano BB-UN55 cartridge - All going well but the instruction, yes occasionally I do read them, calls for 50-70 Nm (435-608 in/lbs) torque - This seems kind of much for that little non drive side aluminum collar - Am I missing something...

Nope, all the Shimano cartridge BB have the same torque values; plastic or alloy, fixed side or lock ring/collar.

Since there are really no forces playing with the NDS cup, I just make 'em good and snug. Now the drive side gets spec, as that's where it needs it. YMMV.

French and Italian threaded fixed cups have a way of unscrewing themselves while you ride. English threading doesn't have that problem. So... whatever the recommended torque, if your fixed cup goes in with a right-handed thread, make sure it's good and tight.

I always tighten cartridge BBs until I think it seems the prongs on the tool are ready to break off. I also put anti-seize or high quality grease on the threads before I thread them on.

I just tighten the thing how I see fit paying no mind to the torque specs.

Yep, that's the one... I was engaging in a bit of hyperbole about breaking the prongs. They are technically splines, I suppose. Go ahead, beat me up for making a mistake!

I figured you were referring to a pin spanner and had not yet had your coffee.

Don't worry, the NDS cups on these things will splinter apart long before your tool.

(The OP's ? was about the NDS cup)
