Do these belong here? I built my K2 on the cheap with a late '80s classic flare. Chorus cranks, brake calipers, Tektro levers, shipmano 600 hubs (6spd uniglide swapped to 7spd HG) barends, RD and of course what could be more classic than silver tubular rims.
I tried to build this like a older cruiser or the classic upright tourers from the '70. The frame is a '98 but the compontes are mostly '80s or older.
The hedious gel saddle has be replaced with a nice honey Brooks

I am also fond of some of the "new" Vintage bikes. Like the steel Allez
And the Dolomiti
https://lawyerjim.blogspot.com/2008/0...irst-look.html
And 2011 Tipo Corsa frame
https://www.bianchiusa.com/bikes/road/steel/tipo-corsa/(a painted up Dolomiti frame I believe with a steel fork)
Now there is I frame I would like to build up; I even already have the components !

Here are some additional modern steel frames that would make good looking "vintage" bikes:

Thanks for compiling this list! I may go this route for my first high end road bike.

That, and silver-colored spokes. Other than that it looks mighty fine!

BTW, it's kind of comforting to see that anything from the 90's is considered modern.

Very nice, gomango!
I ran into Chris Kvale at the Heartland Velo Show in Madison where he had a number of bikes on display. I was very impressed!

I agree that fork does carry alot of vintage flare. now you need wood fenders and some Sprint Carriers. I really want butterfly nuts for mine.

I think that these Miyatas go the full distance towards making a new machine that recalls the vintage bicycle.

Sometimes "the Vintage Look" works, and sometimes it doesn't.
And sometimes the Look is decidedly not vintage...

How did you get a real head badge on that Mercian?? I've only ever seen decals on the head tube. Is it special to that model?
My King of Mercia frame was made in 2002. The parts that I used don't all look very classic, but mostly people think this bike is around 30-40 years old.

Just saw a new Raleigh Grand Prix at an LBS today. and the made in China CrMo (Reynolds, but no number called out on the label) frame looked very impressive.. Fully lugged with very clean brazing under very nicely finished lugs and points. The paint looks very good in dark candy red. There's also very interesting details at the dropouts and the BB (specially behind the BB where the chainstay bridge has some sculpted details on it that you might have only seen in very expensive bikes in the 80's. 800 some bucks for the whole bike. IMO. because of the build quality of the frame alone, it's worth it.....
Funny the Chinese can't put anything but a cheap black and white "Made in China" paper sticker on the bottom of the seat tube to show where it was made. The frame looks so good that you'd think that they'd show more pride that it was made by them....
If you have a raliegh dealer near you, I think it will be worth checking out.

From what I can find online: they are built to customer order only and complete bikes start at $ 5,600, frames at $ 4,400. (Source)

Yes, but they're awfully pretty. And you'd be the only one on your block to have one. I especially like this Peter Winnen memorial version (although his Alpe d'Huez bikes were blue of course):

Mercians have a classic design that makes it hard for people to judge their age.
Also, the color match on your Mercian and trailer is amazing! Very nice look.
In answer to your question, Mercian had just started offering a real metal headbadge as an option on any of their models when my frame was made. There are now 2 different ones available.

More than I am ever going to afford unless I want a divorce as well as committing financial suicide. That being said, it is not a market freak at half a million yen a copy when you consider the prices of off-the-rack, higher-end plastic bikes.
The ordering feature concerns a catalog of available options. The buyer has to accept geometry that is commensurate with the the specific sizes they offer. So, these bikes are not a true custom bike in the fullest sense. The advert says delivery may take 4 months. As the man says, it's a very pretty bike.

Hey Chombi ... thanks! If I can find a smaller size in that Raleigh, it might be the answer for a friend who wants a roadie.
