the 2013 a Century every Month challenge

This succeeds the 2012 thread, which replaced the 2011 thread.

Okay, who's in this year?

TimmyT and I hit the road at six this morning, rode from near Trenton NJ down into the Pinelands. Got back to my house around 3:30 having ridden 105 miles.

No photos were taken! I apologize for that oversight.

Tim was on an eighties Univega, I on a twenty year old Basso (more on that later, elsewhere). Strange weather, warm in the morning but gradually cooling as the sun failed to show.

We saw a fox, lots of deer, a humongous flock of geese, one blue heron, some turkeys, and clouds of blackbirds.

If someone already started this thread, let me know, please!

I may try to get in on this for 2013.
I certainly enjoyed following the 2012 edition.

I'm in; the list for the must-do centuries, vintage rides and charity rides (ugh!) have me pretty much covered for most of the months, only this month, february and november and december arent't booked yet.

gomango 01-13-13 06:36 AM

I'm in.

Joined a new rando group yesterday that does most of its rides on outstate country roads.

Yep, that means gravel.

Our team goal is 6,000 miles per member.

Hope they don't hurt me! :)

pastorbobnlnh 01-13-13 08:23 AM

If I do a 1/2 century once a month (and sometimes more), will you let me participate as an affiliate member of the club? ;)

Seriously, finding any day in a month to devote 8-10+ hours for a ride is the biggest challenge I face! :(

OK, I'm glad there are some takers for the new year. I started with a 200k Brevet yesterday. Rode my 1981 Specialized Sequoia. A seriously beautiful day along the California coast. We started in frosty conditions and stayed cool all day but the skies were blue and view out to the Channel Islands was spectacular!

Sounds fantastic.

Was the entire route long Highway 1 yesterday?

I rode along a fair share of 1 when we were out in La Jolla.

It was spectacular at times.

Hi gomango

The route started inland in Moorpark, through the foothills to Ventura and then a loop around Casitas Lake before following the coast from Carpenteria to Pt Mugu. http://ridewithgps.com/trips/1091143

We have another route that continues down the coast to Solana Beach. Good times!

Thanks Jim.

I can imagine a fantastic ride for you yesterday.

What a scenic area and it looks like you did a boatload of climbing as well.

We did 32 miles yesterday on our mtbs, but it was around 16 degrees!

Our ride this afternoon will be beastly cold. It's currently 4 degrees here in St. Paul.

That's without the wind.

Well, I suppose we could pencil you in as "spiritual advisor.".

But what you say is true. You have to be able to devote a whole day to riding. Even if you end up not riding all day long, you will be too wiped out to undertake anything more challenging than emptying out a couple bottlesv of beer and passing out on the sofa.

AZORCH 01-13-13 12:51 PM

I pulled it off in 2011, but missed a couple of months in 2012. I'm giving it a shot again this year if the weather holds this month and next.

Chrome Molly 01-13-13 08:18 PM

Single digits here, otherwise I'd be in for sure. North of 45 degrees, unlikely. I do like reading the posts and living vicariously during the long winter. So consider this an offering of support to the rest of you :)

seedsbelize 01-17-13 05:32 PM

Every winter I say I'm in. And then the summer inferno sets in and I wonder what was I thinking!? Today we didn't break 70 degrees, which is a very, very rare occurrence in this neck of the woods. And so I forget how hot it will be in just 3 short months. I'll chime in when I ride one, and maybe I can scare up twelve for the year.
I was a bit concerned that my new century bike is only 21 years old, but the Basso has taken care of that one.

Half-Century A Month Club?

Bob, perhaps we should just start a thread for those that can do a half century every month. I think I can do that every month and might even be able to do a century or two this year. Whaddya think? On only my second ride of 2013, I managed to get in a 48 miler.

What say ye, dear sir?

rhm 01-17-13 07:00 PM

Oh, come on, either ride the century, or make it a metric century, or just lie about it! It isn't difficult.

Getting a metric shouldn't be a problem for me, but I'm trying to accommodate PB here. Now as far as PB telling a lie, that's not something I'd count on!

JReade 01-17-13 07:21 PM

I did a metric on Monday night, had the legs, didn't have the time for a full.

I know I can't compete on the difficulty that weather plays while trying to ride year round. I try to make up for it by doing more climbing! Yesterday I rode 98.8 miles with beautiful clear blue sky and only a moderate headwind. I just have to tell you all about it because it was a particularly great ride and I did use my '84 Sequoia. Yes, I know I'm over achieving for January; please forgive me! This ride was over the un-maintained road called the "Ridge Route". First opened in 1915, it was the first motorway to connect the Los Angeles area to Sacramento. It followed the ridgeline along the mountains north out of LA to the Grapevine. It has been closed for many years and is is great dis-repair but is passable by bicycle. What a journey! And I started from my front door.

I am including a link to a photo album so you can see the pictures and narrative if you want. Laugh all you want when you see what I consider and "icy" road. Happy riding!

Hey, I'm most definitely down for this! I've already got between 60 and 70 miles with the guys locally in Phoenix and I'm riding Tuesday up South Mountain, then doing some miles in Tucson with Kvltbryce Friday. Should easily hit 100 by the time I head for SD and DG.

Sign me up :)

Well, we have no rules here, but the idea is you ride the whole hundred miles in one day, preferably as one long ride.

seedsbelize 01-27-13 09:25 PM

See post #3189 in 'Where'd you ride today?'

leaping_gnome 02-04-13 08:56 AM

I rode the California Riviera 200k brevet http://www.pchrandos.com/html/brevets.html on Saturday, 2/2/2013, on my 1974 Motobecane Le Champion. Sorry, no pictures, I've covered this area up and down the CA coast near Santa Barbara so many times that it was not worth the bandwidth of another set of pictures. It was a nice, overcast day with just a slight sprinkle of rain near the end in Ventura. Had mechanical issues with the brakes and my left shoe cleat kept loosening up and finally lost a screw. Had to stop at a bike shop for repairs. Still, a very nice ride and shakedown cruise for the Motobecane.

pastorbob is right that allocating a whole day is tough when real life is expecting us to participate.

And my problem is that on top of that, I need to allocate another day after a century to recover!

Dallas, you are going to ride your first century this year, and you may ride more than one. You're almost there.

puchfinnland 02-04-13 09:08 AM

Dallas, what you think we got in for january?
the fredrick run 50miles,

then I rode at least another 50 on my own for january.

now If I join I got to get myself a winter bike with studs....:(
