Upon getting my Legnano Gran Permio II road ready for its test ride, I jumped on the bike in the back lane. Pushing on the pedal created two results...
The bike went forward and the stem/handlebar assembly swung to the right...
...causing me to loose control at 1 mph. Needless to say, I was clipped in and went down like a falling turd. No harm done to me or the bike but my buddy, literally, had a urine accident, literally, which I (pardon the pun) spotted immediately:-) That, of course, added even more humor to the situation and created one more vintage bicycle story to tell.

When I lived in Kansas City, I used to hike the paved trail at the Weston Bend State Park. This park overlooks the Missouri River, the local river bluff topography is very eroded, and the trail is extremely steep in places. I was stepping down one such stretch, as it was so steep, you had to shorten your stride and be careful not to step on anything which could roll under your boot. I was met at the bottom by a group of people on bikes going the other way. I took a couple more steps...hmmmm...and looked back just in time to see disaster. One fellow's front wheel came way up in the air, and calling it wheelie did not do it justice. His feet fell off the pedals, and that was a good thing, because he got a grip on the pavement just as the near-vertical bike began to fall sideways. It was a spectacular save, and I think he remained standing through the whole thing, but looked terrified.

Another "I didn't crash" vignette, but believe me, I might not be writing this if I had...
Was riding Mount Rainier with a group of eight local racers back in 2003, riding the Davidson in its previous Super Record configuration. I had to really work to keep up with all the modern machinery (and, let's face it, the awesome fitness of these dudes and the one gal). However, I came into my own on the backside as we bulleted down the switchbacks.
One guy was in front of me. We came flying down a straight section, just about the brake for a left-hand hairpin. Just as I began to hit the brakes my front wheel hit a small stone - the front of the bike came up off the deck a good couple of feet, my hands both left the bars and I found myself riding a wheelie no-handed at 40+ mph.
Somehow, someway (it wasn't skill - just pure luck) I came back down and both my hands found the bars simultaneously, allowing me to brake and sweep through the left-hander unscathed. No, I was not wearing a helmet
The kicker? Less than a minute later, the leader punctured and we all pulled over to re-group as the repair was effected. My bike suffered no ill-effects whatsoever.
Probably my closest brush with disaster ever...
