High Flange/Low Flange or Large Flange/Small Flange?

Back in my younger days, (ahem) I referred to hubs as high flange/low flange until I was corrected by an older "more knowledgeable" type who said it was large flange/small flange.

Which do you say and why?

Say flange a few times out loud...doesn't it start to sound strange?

It's high-flange & low-flange. Never listen to old-timers with more experience, when they disagree with you.

I'm sizing up hubs for my next build, and almost all vendors talk about high or low. Your oldtimer friend was right though in Italian: campy boxes are marked either grande or piccolo.

It always was "High" and "Low" for me....which was sometimes shortened to "Hi" and "Lo" for added modern khewlness.....
But what does a crabon C&V bike lover like me know anyway......maybe I should call them charcoal bikes instead then and half the C&Vers won't notice.....

It doesn't matter. Even Campagnolo used the terms interchangeably, within the same catalog!

True. Until you come across an ad that reads LF whatever hubs. Then you have to ask...low flange or large flange.

I have a set of both and have always heard read high and low. At the moment the low arr built into a set of wheels on my 87 Paramount while the high are in a drawer waiting for my budget to accomodate a worthy set of rims.

Piccole: adj. small, little, tiny; low;

High Flange/Low Flange or Large Flange/Small Flange?

The cool racing set- up from my racing days was small flange on the back wheel and large flange up front.

Communication is the key, forget what the "knowledgeable" say.

The denotation LF is confusing, so I don't use it. What does the guy mean , Low or Large Flange?

Small Flange = SF
High Flange = HF

For use in english. Most often I spell it out as there is no universal convention.

The French and Italians have an easier time.
