I ride a 39t inner ring normally now, and paired to a 26t cog, it's still not low enough as I've discovered for some of the climbs here. Therefore, I personally don't recommend the cost of a new 39t chainring, a 26t cog max cassette, though I believe the 105 derailleur will do a 28t cog.

^ Yes, should fit your 105 BB.
Yes, friction shifting a FD is preferred, IMHO. Fine trim.

Can you friction shift a triple ?
Thanks all
Dave.
I am by no means the world's leading expert on cranksets, but I see no problem with your proposed solution. You can get chainrings down to 24T for the inner position if necessary. You certainly can friction shift a triple, there's certainly less risk/difficulty getting it set up successfully than with a indexed triple.

On my DA 7700 crank, 130BCD, I run Stronglight 48/38 gears.

Interesting thread for me —I'm glad it came up. I'm building my Gazelle for 60 minute sweats on the flat (mostly) and I want to spin using a 5 cog cluster (SunTour Perfect). I'd like a nice chain line on the big ring to a cog combination that comes close to the inch gain on my SS bike. I'm assuming that I'll have to assemble the bike and see where the chain will end up before I can select rings. But I may have even a more difficult situation that the OP. I want to use a SunTour 7000 series crank, which has 144 BDC. There may be even fewer rings available than for 130! And I seem to remember the ones that are cost a fortune.

I found a Velo Orange 30-46 crankset that I really like though pricey (for me). Lots of low gears and a shifting pattern ,with my cassette even I can remember . Velo said my axle/spindle needed to be 118mm. The best I can measure mine is 4.445"=113mm. Will .197" (just over 3/16") REALLY make it unusable?
Thanks
Dave.

There's really a pretty good chance you'll need the wider spindle.

Yep. Talked at length with VO and FSA ,they recommend not using their 30/46 or 22/32/44 crankarm sets on the 113mm spindle. Sooo.. It's change the BB and spindle or I found a Dimensions double 110/74 170mm crankarm set online. If I can grab onto a 30t/74 and a 46/110 I'll try to put a crankset together.

Any Advise..Anyone?

PS . Boy! I have learned a lot about cranksets and chainrings from this thread , Thanks All.
Dave

Yes. Go with the nicer crankset and the 118 spindle. I probably have one in my parts box if you need it.

Definitly still an option. I really like that VO 30/46. Waiting for the HCW-4 to get here from Parks. I can get the old BB out and find out which model to get.
Course putting one together with the same pattern from scratch might be fun.

The 105 crankset is 130mm BCD, and should take a 113-115mm BB spindle. That's long enough for some modern triple cranks that use square-taper BBs.
I think I've bout worn Sheldon's Gear Calculater out over the last few days LOL.
After going for a ride on my old bike and fighting some BAD headwind/steep UP Hill and getting down to my 42/34(33") and wishing for more I think I better go for a triple much like your Alivio or maybe FSA's 22/32/44 . The shifting pattern comes out perfect and more LOWER gears. My present BB is 68mm with a 110 spindle.

Did you use a road FD with the Alivio or did you have to go to a wider range FD on?. I'm using mine in friction now.
Thanks
Dave.

I stayed out of this because I never understood the whole compact crank thing especially on a road bike, and I didn't want to start a debate on the issue. But I was rather suprised skimming through the post that very few suggested the OP first course of action would be to drop that corncob and simply get a wider cassette.

A 13-26 or 28 cassette and simlply chainging the outer ring to a 48 may give the OP a better simpler solution. If the OP lived in the Ozarks or smokey mountains then a compact may be in order but IIRC norther Florida is still kind of flat.

Bianchigirll "drop the corncob and get a wider cassette"
Thanks, and a 14-28 really would get me down a couple of gears below 50 g",with the lowest speed 42/28=39". Which was really my goal when I started the thread. After yesterdays ride I would like to have a few down around the low 30s high 20s. I thought I was going to have to get off and push (; Sore knees today.
Funnily enough when we bought the bike I ask for straight "corn cob" 13-19 cassette. The mechanic suggested a couple of bigger gears as I "Might sooner or later, find a hill somewhere in the future". Never found one in SoFla but with the added years I've certainly found some now.

Just watch your max tooth and chain wrap on the RD.

Got my new 36MM BB tool and opened er up.
FWIW the Raleigh RT 500 does have a cup and cone with a thick plastic "accordian"type sleave over the spindle. I was surprized how clean everything was.
The spindle measures 113mm and the BB is 68mm. I cleaned/greased everything up with new bearings and put it back together just in case the new/old triple will fit right in. Here's hoping.
