Help Dating & ID-ing a Mondia...
I bought this Mondia on Ebay from a seller in Poland after he took an offer I made. He really didn't have too much info on it, other than it was a Mondia 'Special'. Since the Decal that says 'Special', is on the seat tube & not the down-tube where it is usually placed for a Special, I'm not sure if this is a Special or not? Also: The decals are peeling off & can be scraped off very easily w/ my fingernail, which leads me to believe, another set of decals might have re-applied at some point? It does appear to have the original paint job though.
The only braze-ons are the 2 cable guides on the BB, bottle bosses & a RD cable stop. French threaded BB w/ a 25.8mm seat post diameter (I think?). Dropouts are Piazza. There is no tubing decal, so type of tubing is unknown. I would like it to be 531, but I don't know how to tell. Serial # is 509334 & is stamped on the bottom of the BB, not on the seat lug/stay. The brakes mounts are prolly short reach & are not for recessed nuts...but nutted. Top Tube diameter measures 26.2mm // DT=28.2 // ST=28.2. Has eyelets for fenders/racks & there are no drain holes (9 or 6) drilled in the bottom of the BB, typical for Mondias. It is not a Super Model, or it would have been written on the Badge. This one only says Mondia, so I don't think it's high-end model.
Not sure if it warrants a new paint job, but I'd would like to re-decal it w/ appropriate one's. I'm going to fix it up w/ extra parts I have around to limit my expense & hunt around for a few items it needs to get it working. I have 2 other Mondias, so this one will most likely be a kicker. My orig intention was to score the bike for the Head Badge, since my other Mondia is missing one, so now I have another project to fool with...lol.
Any help nailing down a date or model would be great...& would you do a repaint...?
edit: After a bit of research, I'm inclined to believe this is an 'Amateur' Model, regardless of the present Decals. And; Vintage Mondias made prior to '88 were made w/ Reynolds 531 tubing.

Seat stay tops don't look like my Mondia, but its a Nervex one: maybe they changed at some point. I know Bikeology sold some that had those lugs, late 70s.

late '70s or early '80s was when I saw them with lugs and details like this...I thought they were still Reynolds 531, but not so positive about that (or my memory).
Seatpost size might tell us somethin'.
I'd like to see a close-up of the DO: never heard of a "Piazza".

thanks for that link, plenty of detailed Mondia trivia there...for a minute I got all excited cause I thought the Wool Jersey site had somehow risen from the dead! But it's something that looks the same but now called Velo-pages (and much less stuff, but what's there looks great!)

The DO stampings are not pressed-in that deep, esp the front DO. It is hard read, but they do say 'PIAZZA". I've never seen these before either. My 2 other Mondia's both have Campy DO's.

Your seatpost and seat tube diameters are consistent w/ straight gauge 531 -- Capo #1 has 26.4 and 28.6, so our tubing wall thicknesses are pretty close.

the rear looks a lot like a Gipiemme: it has that little "bump". I think they are GPM with some bizarre stamp (Piazza) on them.

Resurrecting this thread because I just found the exact same frame, including identical paint / lug detailing, abandoned on a back-road here in Switzerland. Those decals are original apparently, so it is some kind of "Special," but I can't figure out what year, or how it differs from other "Special" models that Mondia produced. There is very little info about vintage Swiss bikes available, even in Switzerland.

The Mondia "Special" touring frame featured a front fork with a pronounced curve and a slightly greater rake that provided a very comfortable ride, though described by some as noodly. The Special also featured ornate Nervex chrome frame lugs. Brazed-on brake cable sheath stops were mounted along the lower right side of the top tube. Another fixture on the Special were brazed-on attachments to mount front and rear racks for cross-country touring gear.

I have a Super from the late 80's w/ 531 Spl lightweight tubing & another one that's an earlier model I restored w/ paint & decals, but w/ an ergo drivetrain.
Problem is; one's a bit too tall & the other's a tad too small... lol! (60cm & 55cm). Although, the taller one rides great & weighs only 19 lbs...
IIRC, The one like yours is a 58 cm model. I built it up w/ spare parts, but kinda dropped the ball on it about a year ago due to injuries. Rides OK, but was having a problem getting it to shift to the largest rear cog w/ the Mavic RD & Campy Bullet shifters. It's got me scratching my head...?

Hello all,
I recently purchased a Mondia Special and would love to know its origination date. I found it on registry under a guy named Richard Powell and know that it was originally chrome. It was black when I bought it but I stripped it down and re-sprayed it baby blue with aqua blue accents. I decided not to get it re-chromed and

This is very pretty I love the baby blue and chrome and that red accent in Mondia really makes the whole thing pop out. great looking ride.
