Thumb shifter to bar end adaptor?

I'd like to upgrade the shifters on my old Fuji to something nicer than the stem shifters it has now. Bar ends seem like the way to go, but I'm on a very tight budget. I have a set of thumb shifters and was hoping there's a way to Jerry-rig them into bar ends. Anyone done or seen this before?

Yes, to an extent. Look in the MTB drop bar conversion thread.

I just ordered some cheapy Falcon shifters for $12 for that very purpose. I'll let you know how it goes.

I think the only way is to clamp them to the end of the bar. I am not sure about Suntour, but the way the shimano thumb shifters mount to their clamp is incompatible with the way the barends mount to the 'pod' that mounts to the bar.

shimano DT shifters can easily be mounted to barend pods, but I thiunk your out of luck doing that with the thumbshifters.

Depending on the make and model of your stem shifters you might be able to use those, but most lowerend shimano clampon shifters can't be relocated to a DT brazeon type boss, which is basically what the shimano barend pod is.

A used pair of Suntour Barcons can usually be found on Ebay for somewhere in the $30 range, if your budget can handle that.

here is a pair of Shimano bar-ends that nobody has bid on yet, starting at $20.

I did it with some Suntour indexed thumbies on a Puch MTB that I used for a winter commuter. I just clamped them to the end of the bar (clamp faced inboard, shifter outboard), no problems at all, I don't ride with my hands on the ends of the drops, so the clamps weren't a bother. I just started the bartape after the clamp.

Yup, that's the bike.

The thumb shifters are low-end shimano, the stem shifters are suntour. I hadn't considered using those but it might be worth a try. Or just clamp the thumbs onto the drops...
