Hoods for Shimano Brifters
I am looking to replace the hoods on some '90s Shimano 600/Ultegra (6400) brifters. Does anyone know of generic (i.e. inexpensive) hoods that will fit. The NOS/new Shimano hoods are $50 and up. Thanks.

You know, just last week we had a thread about this, wishing for something similar... there's a small fortune waiting to be made by the first outfit that, ala Hudz, comes up with a series of mid-'90s Shimano & Campy replacement hoods, esp. in more colors than black, tan, and occasional white.

Hudz has colors, they sell black, too.

Well, yeah, but it's all compatible with everybody's new 10sp gear, not the older 1055 through 5500-style shifters.
There are still a lot of shifters from that period still in service (which will arguably remain in service for quite some time, considering how well-made a lot of the 8sp gear was), but the newer-style hoods don't exactly fit them and NOS hoods are getting scarce (and therefore expensive).
I'm using Shimano as the egregious example, but the same can apply to older Campy hoods.

I saw that thread. If it was the same one you are talking about they were looking for hoods for DA 7402 levers. I bought a set of those levers in near perfect condition (including hoods) for $30 last summer. That is less than you can buy the hoods for. The price for hoods is getting ridiculous especially Campy hoods. Luckily all my Campy levers have hoods in great condition.

Yup, same thread; my opinion hasn't really changed since last week... (Imagine that!)
As for hoods though, I totally get where you're coming from- I dealt with the same situation when I needed replacement hoods for a set of 6400 STIs I picked up at a bike swap a few years ago. I paid only $20 for the shifters (which work great since I cleaned all the little bits of frayed cable out of the mechs) but $45 for new(ish) hoods.

If you don't want to go through that hassle, then pick some up on ebay, they are spendy.
The trick is finding a shop that does not toss the old stuff, or to get there when they are ready to toss it. I went to one local shop that had quite an accumulation, and they decided to clear out all of it. I bought the pile for a very reasonable price.

OH, yeah. Every shop I visit while traveling, I ask if they have any Cannondale top tube cable guides or NOS SHimano brake hoods.
Sadly, these days I usually leave empty-handed...

Funny, I did that very thing two summers ago (btw- at the time, kicking myself for not having thought of it sooner). I raided an LBS and snagged a handful of broken Ultegra units just for the hoods (I'm not going to pay another $45 just for a stupid pair of molded rubber sleeves). Broken, they'll usually go for about $10 - $15 each. It's kind of ironic that you can buy a whole unit for significantly less than the hoods on their own. And while these aren't exactly NOS, they're still in better shape than the hoods that originally came with my 6400 shifters.
