My newest Schwinn Premis ( classic 80s )

I am in the process of collecting 1988 schwinn road bikes. I love the year 88 because schwinn went CRAZY with the paint that year. I am a huge 80s fan overall and so it makes sense that I enjoy collecting the 80s bikes. I fell in love with the geometry of the 88 schwinn lineup. I got started with a white/yellow fade Prelude in 58cm. Next I got a Silver/White Premis and now I have found myself the Purple/Pink/Blue fade Premis in 56cm. I rode this bike for the first time yesterday and of course it rode very well. Its Columbus Tenax, Suntour Cyclone 7000 Accushift, Weinmann Aero Wheelset. Pretty much all original except for the seat, bartape, and the Panaracer pasela's. Paint is in very good shape except for the normal scratches, no rust anywhere on the frame. Traded a 88 Dave Scott for this bike...the DS was too big it was a 61cm.

Here are some pics from my ride around the city yesterday.....enjoy.

Nice bike! I also have a soft spot for the 88's and the 87's in my case.

Yea I have found a couple 87's World Sport, Traveler, to name a few Ive found. I really am only collecting the nicer ones....the Traveler would be the lowest I would call a "keeper". The worldsports I flip and sell the Traveler I traded to my LBS for 6-7 project bikes to flip.

I understand, I've got an 87 tempo and an 88 premis.. I don't think I'd go any lower than that. Speaking of, I think I'm gonna go ride my premis now have fun with your bike!

I wish it was Ole....this is a mix of Diacompe Alpha II brakes, Sake FX Cranks, and Suntour Cyclone 7000 Front/Rear Derailleur, and white Suntour Accushift downtube shifters.

Welcome to the mid-eighties-club!!

The mid-eighties and late eighties are my favorite years. Like you with the Schwinns, I am in to the mid eighties Raleighs. Also, the Ironmans too. That 61cm Dave Scott was just my ticket.

I always do a search fo the Prelude, Premise, Tempo, and Poloton. The Paramounts demand high prices, so i don't include them in my search..

Crazy about my 86 Prelude, and always looking at mid eighties bikes.

You Premis is awesome!!

Thanks man!! Appreciate the kind words. I think the late 80s are cool because the paint on the bikes are usually pretty "loud", and by the late 80s even the mid range bikes like the Premis and Prelude had really good components and had nice wheelsets etc. I feel like in the early 80s only the higher end bikes had the nice tubing, aluminum wheels, downtube shifters. My prelude rides just as nice as both my Premis' do, but the Premis is just a hair lighter because it has a Cromoly fork and some of the components are a little bit lighter. The Prelude weighs 23lbs, both Premis' are 21.5 lbs or so. I have a 63cm Raleigh Team USA that Im building right now. Im going to flip the Raleigh because its just too tall for me. The Raleigh has 555SL tubing, pretty light I think around 24lbs

87 is the year I dig ! Both a Traveler and my fav... Super Sport. Heck, would love to find any mid/late 80's Schwinn road bike.

You've got a very nice collection going on there. Keep it up !

Dam man, we both on a roll... If I wasn't jammed to the hilt with mid eighties Raleighs, and another one on the way, I would be making a claim on that 63cm Raleigh Team USA. I am quite sure it has that red and black frame which I would die for!! . However, I must quench the temptation. I must, I must!! About a year ago, I caught another prime Prelude on CL, but it was way to small, however, the seller was only asking $100, so I grabbed it, wiped it off an flipped for $160.. As you say, the Premis is higher in the line to the Prelude. It is right there with the Tempo, and Peloton.

On to the Raleigh again. I just got a kickazz 85 Raleigh Grand Prix that was built, and it almost can go on the wall in my living room for art!! Got another one coming and going to try to out do the first one. Again, the mid to late eighties is the chit in my book. I hope they(Italian lovers) don't get mad, but the Italian jobs, costing 3 to 4 times as much, don't have chit on the late eighties Asian made bikes. Just my opinion.

Im with you man, the late 80s asian bikes ( my schwinns are panasonic made ) are every bit as good. I mean my schwinns are made with columbus tubing, have the same head/seat angles as the italian bikes and ride just as nice but at like 1/4 the cost. Now this doesnt mean I wouldnt give a left nut for a Colnago, but thats mainly because the Colnagos, Bianchis etc were just so pretty to look at. The Raleigh is Red on the 3 main tubes and then a dark blue on the rear stays. It has mismatched wheels so If I was keeping it I would find a nice 700c set but since Im just gonna flip it Ill keep the 27's on it because I like flipping bikes on the cheap ya know.

edit : Throw up some pics of your Raleighs man. :-)

Also, not shown, are the kickazz Centurion Ironmans, with the Cannondale Black Lightning taking up the rear, all mid-eighties treasures!

i definitely think that the mid to late eighties represents schwinn's finest work. lots of columbus tubing, good components, and sweet paint schemes. my baby is an 86 super sport with campy super record and 600 mixed.
