Shipping stuff is getting expensive.

Just shipped a crank and some pedals out a another forum members, put it in a thin box that was suitable for it's size. It is going from toronto to NC. Cost me 25 bucks. WTF....

i don't remember it ever being that expensive. Maybe recently rates went up? maybe due to gas prices?

I ship a lot and i don't ever remember it being that expensive by Canada Post.

maybe i should try fedex or so.

what are other member's experiences, even in the US

I just shipped(USPS) a frame to a member on here and what I found strange is that shipping priority is MUCH cheaper then anyother option. NC to PA Priority only cost 30$. Any other way would have more then doubled that !

As to what the cost situation is now for shipping, I do not ship enough to notice any increase. But youknow, it's only gonna go one way ^^^^

Makes sense, coincidentally I just sent a frame from PA to NC and it was $30. I thought that was very reasonable.

u guys are so lucky with gas that it's unbelievable. I was in denver recently and my cousing was complaining about how expensive it was at 3 dollars a gallon. In canadian terms that would equal 0.78 a liter.

in toronto right now it's $1.30 a liter which multiplied by 3.78 to equal a US gallon equals $4.91 cents a gallon. This is stupidly ********...

USPS raised all their prices about a week ago. And I know Itnl was hiked quite a bit, including Canada. Not sure about coming the other way but I'll bet our rates affected your cost too.

Higher fuel costs actually stimulate the economy, increase domestic productivity and tax income. It also makes your bikes more valuable.

Also, the price you are charged for inbound shipping is called "rack charge" the sender gets a portion of what you spend. What has happened is the retail price on shipping has gone up to protect the big spender from cost increases. That's the game they play with taxes down here. Individuals pay all the taxes while corps get off free.

It's pretty ripe to hear someone in a bike forums complaining about high gas prices 'cos they are shipping premium bicycle parts across thousands of kilometres across the continent There's a great louis c.k. sketch called everything is amazing and nobody is happy and I think it's appropriate here Canada Post is kind of messed up though, it used to be a debt-free crown corporation in the 00's and now it's gone and done this weird sort of modernizing thing, like that weird email site for all your bills that basically amounts to a virtual mailbox for no reason on another site. They have also moved postal outlets around like chess pieces in Kitchener in the last 10 years. Canada Post also get a lot of revenue for delivering junk mail so yeah. They do have to deliver mail to every Canadian by law though so that does cost a bit of dough these days.

This is significant for those of us up here who like to pick up low cost items off ebay from the US. Many/most sellers have literally doubled the lowest-cost shipping rates listed as being available via USPS First Class International. Many cheaper items are thus priced out of a worthwhile range.

I'm not so sure about Canada Post - domestic seems fairly consistent, though there are 'fuel surcharges' explicitly added (as I see on some recent receipts).

I hadn't noticed a big hike up here, certainly nothing like the USPS jump in shipping costs to Canada, but I haven't been shipping anything Stateside, and rootboy has a point - USPS may be charging Canada Post additional costs to handle mail originating here.

EDIT: I take clasher's point, but am annoyed at the sudden and precipitous increases nonetheless...

I just shipped a wheel box, wheels and chock full o' 600EX to Cape May NJ, 18.1lbs for $15.63 (Parcel Post)
I sent a 60cm frameset to Michigan for 18.13 two weeks ago. Maybe they knew it was an Ironman and by law, Ironman stuff has to go cheap, fast, and get there.

mapleleafs, I feel your pain. I sold some stuff to a guy in Canada for $80 shipped, down about $20 from what I paid. The shipping was 32.50 I really ate that one. I happen to know the place in NC you're shipping to, maybe I can help a bit by contacting the buyer.

Shipping has picked up, price-wise, if you want accountability. I'm actually driving 275 miles each way this weekend to pick up a bike (BF member). However, I'm dropping off a bike for him to take back to a town near his, and to avoid shipping on two full-size bikes, it's not a bad trade-off. My time is worth nothing, just ask my wife.

The bonus is meeting the BF member, and maybe cehowardGS, too, which will brighten up the way, for sure. He's the cure for the blahs.

On the other hand, for the first time in years, I carefully put cash in a letter to my son, paid for Priority Mail and Delivery Confirmation via stamps.com. 11 days later, it has yet to make it across the state. I learned that while you can pay for Delivery Confirmation on letters via stamps.com, you have to go to the Post Office to get the free form. I also paid a CL seller, via PayPal, to ship a stem 60 miles, and it's been a week, no stem. I also have an order from PBK that is now 25 days old, and nothing. I used to get stuff from them in 10. The postmaster here thinks someone has noticed my in/out volume and decided to help themselves. I fear he's right. The video is going on line soon, and I've already got the AR15. Deterrence purposes, of course.

It blows my mind that the USPS just leaves stuff sitting on people's porches. Canada post for all its faults at least piles it up a local office for us to pick up. I saw youtube videos of people basically following mail trucks around.

I had a box from USPS that they left outside, on top of the garbage can. Meanwhile, four steps away in either direction you have a covered front porch and a covered side porch.....

But I have shipped a lot of stuff USPS, the rates for continental US have been attractive (reasonable) and the service has been reliable and fast.

last night i was pricing a box with some tires.. 26x26x3 or smaller and it's only like $15, but one inch larger in any dimension and it jumped to $35!

USPS is still pretty cheap though.. I sometimes ask CL sellers in the bay area if they will ship stuff because it's cheaper to pay shipping + a little extra than to pay for public transportation and/or gas money
