I have no idea what wheels it had originally. I put 700C wheels and 25mm Paselas on it. But the BB is about 1cm lower than what I'd consider typical of my other bikes. If it was built for 27" wheels and 1 1/4 tires, it would ride maybe 1cm higher. It handles a bit oddly, sort of feels like it doesn't want to turn without significant encouragement. Perhaps that's just what a medium-priced French bike built in Belgium in 1972 should feel like. Or perhaps it would feel different if it rode higher.
FWIW too, I put Mafac Racers on it, and they do like to squeal. A larger wheel would put the shoes closer to the arms' pivots and perhaps stabilize them.
Thoughts, anyone? Yeah, I know, you're probably going to say it won't make any difference.

Here is my 79 Schwinn LeTour IV, a middle of the pack lugged 1020 steel frame. Not the lightest, but Scwhinn bragged about it being under 30 pounds back then. It is what I got back on the road with, a $25 rummage sale find. Needed cleaning, greasing and tires....but the old chrome rims were not to nice. Found a pair of alloy 700s on CRlist, stripped it down, repainted, new wheels, 700/23s, new chain, new aero brake levers, new saddle, new tape....made a good runner of her. Loosing almost 2 pounds between wheels, saddle and brake levers. She weighed about 28 pounds, not light, but pretty resopnsive for a 70's Schwinn from the lower middle end of the lineup ($179 in 1979 dollars)

Heck, I almost forgot this one. I converted it to 700c in 1982;

Here is my 27" to 700cc conversion. I wanted better quality wheels for touring and I found that the selection of 27" rims to be limited. I added a new drivetrain with Tiagra freehub and triple chain rings and Deore rear d. I put a new double pivot tektro long reach front caliper which has really improved braking.

This one went the other direction, but before I got it. My last three bikes were found with 27 inch wheels on them, when 700c was standard issue.
From back in the era when a lot of people ditched their sew-ups, I guess. Luckily I haven't had too much trouble with brake reach or clearance issues.

1990 ST600 from 27 x 1 1/4 to 700 x 38mm. I did have to use a different set of canti's that had more downward reach. The 27's are going to be used on my Surly Cross Check SS project.

I built up my Witcomb with 27" Campy wheelset I had on hand. It's great, but if I ever want to tires that are bigger than 27-28 I'll seriously be considering some 700 rims.
