Cinelli 64/Cinelli 1/R for a 1983 Trek 970
 
I need to find a handlebar and stem for my Trek. The bike was originally fitted with a Cinelli 64 handlebar and a Cinelli 1/R stem, according to the 1983 catalog. I would like a 42mm wide handlebar and a 110mm length stem.

I'm finding a Cinelli Giro D'Italia 64 handlebar silver 42cm width in eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/400382295907...84.m1438.l2649

Is this an equivalent item?

Any alternates that would work as well?

That bar is modern production with a 26.0 clamp diameter so you'll need a 26.0 stem. A lot of the older Cinelli stuff is 26.4 so beware.

Does modern production bother you? If not go with the modern stuff as its probably better quality due to modern production standards. Cinelli reissued stems as well.

The 1R isn't a good stem, if your hell bent on keeping it original go for it, otherwise buy a 1A.

This is what came on mine, As frozen as they were Im guessing they were stock.

Im not sure what model the stem is.

The 1Rs are notoriously hard to get bars to hold. Th clamping mechanism is fragile and prone to splitting or stripping if torqued enough to actually clamp the bars. I normally add a small brass shim to take up space/slack before torquing.

All the 1Rs will be 26.4, so you will need an original bar...also the bars cam in both 26.4 and 26.0, so make sure you get the right one.

Nitto stem, whatever flavor you like, and Nitto Noodle bars...for a century bike.

If you want a more classic bar...Deda 215 (my current pick), Ritchey WCS, or the new production 64-xx in 26.0.

Get an older 64-42 and a 1A. No problems, easily done.

The 1R stem has a tendency to seem to freeze at the clamping bolt. Usually a spray of PB Blaster and a whack with a rubber mallet will free it. Knowing what it looks like on the inside helps with the placement of the hammer blow. If the bars are at the correct angle for your style, I'd just leave it.
