Travel to Austin this week!

I am going to visit Austin and San Antonio this week on family business.

Any tips for swaps, bike shops, SXSW concerts?

I'll be riding on Thursday morning with a group from Minnesota, but other than that I am open for ideas.

TIA

6th street. Check the flyers for blues bands.

Take your wife. Just the sights can make you feel guilty.

Go see the Stevie Ray statue.
I wasn't big on the barbeque, but it's good in it's own style.

I take it you haven't been to Iron Works Barbecue, then. If you like 'que as much as I do, you'll really like this place. It is the best I've ever had, bar none...

Sorry I don't have any C&V or bike related suggestions.

There are a lot of bike shops in Austin, but none that I've been to that have C&V content. If there is one, I'd like to know about it.
There are a lot of people riding around Austin, but in my experience it isn't a very easy city to ride around. Bring your low gears, and traffic is horrendous.
We used to ride out 2222, it is all downhill that way. <g>
+1 on 6th St. No cover and some great bands.

austin during sxsw is like mardi gras in nola the weekend before fat tuesday on crack.

but if you haven't been, it's a great festival. the best of its kind, actually, maybe anywhere in the world. some 5,000 shows during the week. the best will be smaller, more intimate ones during the day. i'm not that hip anymore, and this is a new music/indie rock festival, so figure out when you can see some shows, check the schedule, and go from there. being from the old guard, here are those that interest me from a quick search:

iron and wine
devendra banhart
deer tick
billy bragg
the flaming lips (ever seen them live? its always a great celebration of life and death)
robyn hichcock
feathers
the stooges
the besnard lakes
(and the one i wouldn't miss) nick cave and the bad seeds

Sxsw is going on, sixth street is a circus. It's interactive and film events, with music coming later in the week. Wander around and you'll find plenty to see and hear, even without a wristband. There are tons of websites and apps to help you find out what's going on if you're techy like that. Bring two locks for your bike.

Best BBQ in TX is "Franklin BBQ". You have to wait 2-2.5 hrs in the morning before you get to eat it though =] I'm serious...but it is the best, and I've had lots of Texas BBQ. Otherwise, Rudy's BBQ (self-proclaimed "worst BBQ ever") is ALWAYS welcome in my stomach! I can eat their extra moist brisket and cream corn all day long...

This is about half the line at Franklin:

The front of the line gets there around 9am and they open at 11!

Dirty 6th at night is closed off to vehicles and is a huge party.

If you go riding, all of Highway 360 (Capitol of TX Highway) and Bee Cave Rd west of 360, is awesome. Both have huuuuge shoulders. Just be careful around the highway exits -- sometimes I'll just take every exit/entrance to be safe. Basically anything in West Austin is awesome. Lost Creek is a nice, wealthy, and hilly neighborhood to ride through. I'd be wary of 2222. Coming from the west towards 360 is all one giant downhill, but I wouldn't ride up the other side on the east side of 360 -- it's very curvy with no shoulder and cars zooming by.

For other foods...you need to go to Hopdoddy Burger Bar. Any of their burgers are AMAZING. The one up on N. Anderson Ln should have a shorter line, as the original one is right on S. Congress. For TexMex, check out Trudy's or Chuy's. Trudy's is known for their Mexican martinis and margaritas. "Stuffed Avocado" is a favorite dish there. There are a lot of food places I could throw out there...maybe check out a food trailer or two. If you want REALLY, REALLY GOOD and expensive sushi, go to Uchi. If you want REALLY GOOD, and more reasonably priced sushi, go to Uchiko.

Not much C&V in shops that I can think of. You can check out Mellow Johnny's to see some of Lance's old bikes hanging up on display. BTW, if you want to visit his house, go here: http://goo.gl/maps/F9lRK but you won't see much other than a brick wall =P

NC has its own style, and I'm afraid it's got me in its grip.

I can't possibly argue with that! NC does have some wonderful 'que but I've not explored it nearly as much as the Texas varieties. Perhaps if I spent more time down there, I'd feel differently.

Darn - I'll miss you by a week. I wanted to catch SXSW but my son's schedule pushed us out a week and I'll miss it. Lots of good beer down there - pick up one of their beer guides. If you ride west stop at Thirsty Planet near Dripping Springs.

Austin is the breakfast taco capital of the world! There are many places to go, but Maria's Taco Xpress on South Lamar is hands down my favorite. I have to go there every time I go to Austin. I love the migas tacos, but try them all.

If you are there Sunday Maria's Taco Express has live music. My wife calls it Hippy Church, great
people watching. Usually very busy, parking at a premium.
There are bike shops everywhere.

I'm on the same page as Robbie. Went there twice. Meh. I can get better BBQ way closer to home.

During last year's turkey hunting expedition, we found a little hole-in-the-wall BBQ somewhere in Oklahoma (Paul's Valley?)...... take a look at the lunch "combo" plate. Those good ol' boys do BBQ right:
