how many miles do you go between service?
 

i have about 1500 miles on my trek 930 since the last service, she still feels good, but im curious whats a good amount of miles to tear her down and build her back up again? kinda like the 3000 mile oil change for a bike...
im talking strip down to frame, recable, regrease, readjust etc...

For me it depends more on conditions. If I ride in the wet a lot, I expect to do more service.

That is a tough one. Some of it is time, some is conditions, some is miles. BB gets it about every two years (I have been doing 1000-1200 per year, but that is split between several bikes) it is miles and how much road grime....how often out in wet, gritty conditions? Cables....if they start getting excessive rust, fraying, or dragging...Bar Tape...when it needs it...Tires, when they wear too far or get cut...A FULL stripdown....I usually do that when I GET a bike (and who knows what service they had...some...NONE at ALL!)

Chain/cables/shifters...clean/lube/inspect 100-150 miles
Hubs, headset, pedals...clean/grease 5000-6000 miles
Brakes...inspect as needed
Wheels...inspect 5000-6000 miles

I dont know, but the chain and cassette are the items that wear fastest, why replace good cables?
bearings in a car wheel spin hundred thousand of miles and no one services them.

I would re-grease a bike after 5 years of use, and it still is questionable if it is needed.

grease does dry out over 20-30 years

Every time I do a complete tear down I always end up justifying an upgrade of something or other. Wrenching for me is probably more expensive than having my bike worked on by a pro.:rolleyes:

I overhaul when I get the bike. After that it depends on conditions, but for the most part I don't do it very often.

I maintain items as needed, never on a specific timetable.

The 3000 mile oil change is bogus, too. :lol:

Cattywompus.....I LIKE your thinking! unfortunately, I can't afford to do that.....too often.... My 14 year old has been bugging me to tear into his 86 Team Fuji and replace the BB. I found one at a garage sale, still in the box, Suntour Superbe. His old BB was a little rough, but at the time, we could find NO replacements in town other than a cartridge, so I just did my best with it and put it back together. Guess I will yank that BB and put it in some "Flipper" or something.....and he will be happy....and my supply chest will be emptier! We already replaced his Suntour Sprint RD with a Superbe I found....He LIKES his Fuji and Vintage Suntour.

But...but, it's for the children!:innocent:

it is defintely a condition thing, i don't commute, so i almost never ride in the rain, i like my bikes clean and sparkly... , i was just curious as to when i should take mine down again... not yet !!

I ride in mostly dry conditions, so I mostly monitor the parts for service - if they feel and sound smooth I leave them alone. When I pull a wheel off to fix a flat, I may hold and spin it to feel the brarings. I will also drop the chain off the chainrings and spin and feel the BB. Check the headset for feel and adjustment, etc. But I rarely service something just because it seems like it's been too long.

I don't prefer to ride in the rain, but it happens now and again, we get crazy storms and we don't get many options on riding. I'm slowly replacing all my cup/cone with cartridge BB since I'd rather not worry about them. Replace once every few years, better in the wet.

I dont log mileage but I do keep a good state tune and maintenance with proper tools and a decent shop. BB's and hubs are pretty much every other season. Pedals, every season. When cables feel sluggish I put a bit of Marvel's Mystery Oil through the housings.

As for a total strip down? Nuh-uh.

Anymore when it comes time to replace bearings I will pop in an ISIS and be done with it. Love the one in my Technium. Easy schmeezy.

Sure is. You can double that figure under non-severe conditions.

Unless you drive a VW, and it sludges up, and your engine overheats AND they don't stand by their warrantee, and blame the consumer (and then they quietly change from regular oil to synthetic because of the THOUSANDS of blown engines from sludging.... ) ....yet my wife LOVES her Passat....I have to watch what I say around it....I think it tries to squirt oil at me!

I love my Eurovan, but it starts acting up the second I go over 5000 miles on synthetic. I changed over from old-dino just because my mechanic is about 40 minutes away, and getting up there every 3000 miles was a PITA.

Need to be driving that good ole American Iron! :P I have a '96 Power Stroke, oil changes are at 7,500 miles based on oil analysis. We do toss a pint of additive in around the 3500 mile mark. Currently that means one oil change every 18 months. :rolleyes:

On my bikes they get done when they need it. Only do a complete tear down when I first get them, then only as needed. Average annual mileage is under 3k spread across 4-5 bikes.

I'll replace the bearings & grease in the hubs just before & after each Winter. I have 100's of new bearing balls in the parts drawer, so no big deal if it's overkill.
Except I won't this Spring, since I'm just getting off crutches from breaking my leg last Oct. No Winter riding this year. Probably somewhat limited riding in the future??

I built all my bikes from frame sets, so when I put them together they've been overhauled. :) I've never torn one of my daily riders completely down..... seems like a waste of time. I have changed stuff out here and there as needed - BB's, headsets, wheels, etc.

I'm a bit of a maintenance freak though..... I'm always inspecting and my bikes are always clean, properly adjusted, and lubricated. If I pull one down to go for a ride and something is amiss, I set it aside and choose another. I have a 4 bike rotation.

Any used bike I get I completely tear down and build back up before re-selling. That's the only way I can be sure it is going to be trouble-free for the next owner.

Since I have a billion bicycles, none of them get very many miles.

So, zero maintenance.

Truth be told, I hate it when my bicycles, motor vehicles, furnaces, virtually anything makes a funny noise.

I am an OCD maintenance guy.

I'd only tear down to bare frame for a frame swap or to paint, I think.

I have my RRA torn down to the frame right now. Do it every couple of years. I must like doing it :lol:

Not counting complete overhaul of a newly acquired old bike; I just rotate various components of my bikes through a teardown/clean/relube/reassemble/adjust regimen as I get "tinker time" to do it. Last one to get the full treatment was my GJ, which spanned several weekends as I attended to one component at a time. Other than when I was actually working on it, the bike was fully rideable, and was ridden.
Of course I'm always alert for potential problems, and when anything arises it gets investigated immediately.
So far the only actual "failure" I've encountered is localized pitting apparently due to corrosion on one of the original front axle cones of my GJ. I attribute that to long term storage in moist conditions. The bottom bracket cups had very light surface corrosion, but that polished out satisfactorily. Anyway, it was easy enought to replace the axle assembly with a new unit acquired off Ebay.
Since I distribute my riding among my several bikes, and I like working on them as well as riding them, they are probably relatively spoiled in the maintenance department.
