    Just bought a classic Pinarello - where do I start...

    Hi,

    I was looking for a classic steel bike for a while, and finally bought one. It is a Pinarello Stelvio and as you can see, the bike is in rather average condition. The frame seems good and straight, which is a good base. Mechanically - the chain, chainrings and cassette need to be replaced, wheels need truing, etc. Looks like the bike was never properly maintained.

    Just a general question, as I have never had a bike like this one before - what would you do and where would you start with it? Replace the basic mechanics and just ride as is, or complete a proper restoration, repaint the frame, etc? But where would you get the original decals and other details? And can the chrome stay be restored to its former glory?
    The bike is equipped with Shimano 600, which I am not sure if should be there in the first place, but maybe I am wrong .

    I would not repaint it -- it should clean up pretty nicely.

    Repack all of the bearings.

    Replace the chain and cables.

    If the chain skips over one or more cogs in back, you will have to replace either them or the entire cassette.

    Looks to be in pretty good shape overall. If it were mine, I would strip it down to the bare frame, do any chrome rejuvenation (search for aluminum foil here), and ScratchX / wax the frame (after cleaning). I'd treat any rust spots and try to find a match for touch up paint and touch it up some. Clean all the parts, bearings, repack, reinstall. New cables/housing, chain. Tires/tubes as needed.

    Oh, and that bar tape has to go

    That tape looks new, just unwrap and redo it...

    Nothing wrong at all with Shimano 600. I'm building a bike with it right now.

    I wouldn't repaint it. I would re-wrap the handlebars, true the wheels and get tires that match. You can tell a lot about what needs to be done by riding it so go ride it.

    Waitaminute. What does it mean, "strip it down to bare frame"? If it means remove the components prior to cleaning, then great. If it means strip the paint down to bare metal prior to painting, then don't.

    Most important thing, lube everything you can, ride.
    Real cyclists use toe clips.

    I picked up a Veneto frame a couple of years ago because it was a fair price and it's a Pinarello. It was REALLY cosmetically challenged. Almost all the decals were gone. You can see where they USED to be in the photo.
    I did what others suggested. I did some paint touch up, cleaned and waxed it, threw on some parts and rode the tires off of it for a year. It was fun.

    Don't over think it and DON'T paint it. It was an easy sell when I decided to let it go.

    +1 I agree don't do much to this bike except to get it rideable then ride it for a while a lot of the stuff you think are issues will not be and a couple new ones will pop that aren't even mentioned. Don't ask we don't know, this is part of the love a new old bike you just have to ride it to find out.

    I wouldnīt repaint it. It's a nice bicycle, the paint looks OK for an used frame, and unless you spend a lot of money (replacing practically all components for NOS ones) it wonīt look like new again. As others said, clean, lube, adjust, retape and ride it. If anything's wrong, then fix it.

    The yellow paint in your photos looks like a real close match to Testors yellow model paint. I would touch up the paint chips before waxing the frame. Also be very gentle with the decal areas. Those Pinarello decals flake off just by looking at them too long. Greg Softley aka Cyclomondo may be able to duplicate those blue decals with his current artwork. You might want to contact him through his eBay store if interested in replacing or at least having a backup set when the rest of whats left flake off. For the chrome, just rub wet crumpled aluminum foil over the rusty areas.

    Pinarello decals were not cleared over and tend to disintegrate buy merely looking at them.

    Buff off/goo gone/whatever the remaining decals and clean/polish the frame. Do any paint touch-ups you can/want and apply new decals. Velocals can supply the decals and can include an additional clear UV protective layer.

    My '89 Treviso was decal free when I got it...a little elbow grease and a new decal set and she's "good as new"...

    Yeah, didn't mean to repaint it. Meant to wash the frame, use something like Meguiars ScratchX on it (avoid the decals), wax it, build it back up. Paint looks pretty good as is. If you need to match touch up paint, many times the fork steerer will have some paint on it and is a good place to test, though that means removing the fork.

    But as noted, putting some pedals on it and riding it for awhile will tell you what needs to be done.

    I have to say Old Yeller, the final result is excellent! Would you mind to simply explain how you got this frame restored so well? Obviously, you got a new set of decals, am I right? Looks brilliant!

    OK, time to ride my bike now (not the new beauty, but my everyday one), as I commute to work. I will post later and will get the bike on the road very shortly .

    Now for the OP first bike lower the seat post some and ride baby then ride some more. This is a solid bike.

    The seat post is not yet adjusted or even securely attached . The bike was just unwrapped and put up to take a few shots, so yes, the seat will go down a bit .

    I expereinced the same thoughts when I bought my Colnago. The suggestions are valid! I followed them and am satisfied.
    I took all the componants off the frame, cleaned lubed them all. I had rust on the chrome and had some concern about it. I dipped the fork and head tube in a solution of Oxalic acid for 24 hours which took care of the rust. I just cleaned it up with wax and reassembled. I have tons of pictures on PhotoBucket if you are interested is seeing before and after pics. The CU in the titles means "Cleaned Up". there are some close ups of the fork crown with the rust on the edges of the "C" and clover. The results were satisfying enough. I have not touched up any of the frame scratches yet (seperate album) because the Testors is not quite the right hue.
    Pinarello is on my wish list for N+1 bikes, as are other Italian steeds. Great looking bike and enjoy the ride!
