Favourite Carradice Bag Stand ? Some Lenton porn too... :)
Was asked if I could build some bag stands for a Carradice seat bag and last night I mocked this up after dinner thinking that rather than make a stand that attached to the saddle rails or had a pressed steel clamp, that a seat post clamp would be nice.
Drew the simple shape from some vintage stands I looked at...
And my Lenton could benefit from one of these... before.
After...
Strapped to the rail...
Free... still does not budge.
Clearance...
So... what is your favourite kind of bag stand ?

Also interested in any failures with specific designs people have used... I know the early Bagman support had issues and a few other models like the one sold through Rivendell was not effective when there was no load.
Thinking that a design that has no adjustment screws and a singular clamp that is made from 3/16 chromoly tubing should be pretty robust and plan to make up another with a clamp that can be installed without removing the seatpost... it is enjoyable work that does not use a great deal of materials.
Perhaps I should offer to send a prototype out from a random drawing of respondents to this thread ?

Dagnabbit... I was already thinking of volunteering!
I have a couple supports, but do not remember the brands. One attaches to the seat stays (it springs into position after being squeezed between the stays) and the other one or two attach to the seat rails. I like the idea of one that attaches to the seat post. Would you need to know the size of the seatpost to build them?

I built this one using a section of reclaimed top tube with a 29mm I.D. so it required a rubber shim to fit the old Raleigh seatpost... could make it in any size or make it universal to be used with shims.

I've used the VO stand for years, works perfect, very similar to your design. I also have a stand that mounts to the seat stays (somehow?) maybe with small pipe clamps? Picked it up off ebay.uk but have yet to install it

I haven't used a bag for my Carradice...it sits on my fender. I'd be very interested in giving this a try.

incazzare.
I have one of the Carradice Bagman mounts with a quick release. This is one of the ones with a steel rail and no additional braces down to the stays. It works. It does worry me when I load it up a lot, but so far, so good. The quick release is great, allows me to take my bag with me when I need to.

Bag hanger construction
I posted this some time back, but I'll chime back in now that I've been using it for a few months now. I decided to make my own bag support for the Carradice, something in the vein of the Carradice Bagman. In these pictures I'm mocking up the bends with alloy rod but I wound up using stainless steel rod for the final hanger. Slightly heavier but stiffer and sturdier.
And here we are with the Carradice bag installed. Been through a few hundred miles and a pretty fair amount of road bounce. Still seems to be holding up.

Came home to a large box on the porch. Inside said box were a Carradice SQR Slim and SQR Tour. It'll be interesting to see how the SQR mount and frame compares to the company's Bagman supports.

Here's what my one bag support looks like. It is somewhat different than that which Neal has, but conceptually the same. The other one I'm using is nearly identical to that which AZORCH fabricated.

Photogravity, is the support in your photograph pretty stable? I'm curious if it slides up or down the stays. Seems like a simple enough design, and that appeals to me.

This is just squeezed between the stays and and, as you posited, is held by the springing action of the metal. It can be pretty difficult to squeeze between some stays, but works really well once it is on the bike. There is potential to damage the paint if you're not careful, but since the Norman has a little paint damage there from a Pletscher rack that had been installed at one time, I don't worry much about it.

I bet you could coat the contact points with PlastiDip and it would make things less scratch prone. Do you know if they're still available? I didn't see it listed on the Brooks site.

I think you're right about PlastiDip. I was thinking of gluing strips of inner tube on the inside edges. As far as the brand of the support, I don't know what it is. I got it on a eBay auction a long while back (well over a year ago) and don't think the seller indicated the brand. I'll try to take a closer look at it tomorrow to see if I can spy a brand mark of some sort.
