Anyone have a Blackburn MTN-1 & MTN-2 for comparison?

I'm looking for a rear rack. The Blackburn MTN-2 has caught my eye but is 'optimimized for a 22" inch frame or larger" and I am putting it on a 20" vintage MTB frame. I've contacted Blackburn to get details but maybe one of you knowledgable fellas knows.

What dimension is it that would cause the rack to be frame size specific? Perhaps dropout eyelet to chainstay braze-on (how much would that vary anyway)? I understand there are racks specific to frame type (based on wheelsize) but that isn't the case here. Any reason I couldn't get it to fit?

I saw these MTN-2 racks listed on nashbar and it seemed like the rack itself was slightly shorter than the MTN-1 rack

I have a tall mtb and the standard rack doesn't fit right (it tilts back a little) cause the seat stays are too close to the rack

How tall is the bike you had it on, I guess seat tube CTC would be the best go by..

I think I still have an MTB-1 in the rack pile. I will check when I get home. IIRC it is yellow...

I Have all 3 NOS out in the Garage with the paper work, what exactly do you want ( what do you want me to measure). We have a good selection of these at our shop also including the fronts, let me know if I can help.

Glenn

This is a 20" DB Topanga that has a Blackburn MTN Rack on it, I can let you know the measurements of this.

I like these racks, but they are sometimes hard to find. My experience is that going with the wrong sized rack will result in a tilted rack platform. I jut put a vintage (tall) one on a modern Surly long haul trucker (60cm and 26 inch wheels) and it fits amazingly well.

Also, I just bought a new version of the front rack but it is not the same as the older ones. This one has large diameter tubing rather than the slim aluminum, and while I ordered a "silver" what I got was a grey-ish painted rack. I'm going to send it back.

Glennfordx4, do you have any of the older front racks in silver lying around? If so I'd be very interested. PM me!

swen0171,

There is a difference between the many bikes and where they place the seatstay brazen-ons, if they have them. All the Blackburns in my growing collection have signs of manipulation of some sorts to the sliding tabs that go to the brazens.

I start from the rear drop out connection and then level the rack, release the tension bolts for the tabs and set the length, then see if a bend will work. If not, pull another manufactures rack from the rafters and try that one.

Hey Glenn,

Thanks for the offer! I went ahead and ordered the rack since Nashbar had it on sale so I'll find out soon enough. I think the dimension that must change is the distance from the eyelet attachment to the platform of the rack.

That's the main thing I have found with them, I installed one on my wife's hybrid with 700 wheels & because of where the brazeons are it fit rather well ( I was able to get it more level then it sits in the 1st pic ), on my DB Topanga it has a slight tilt rearward because I ran out of slot on the adjustable arms and these are the same racks which were for a tall frame. I have a med frame rack that I fitted to a 21" GT Outpost frame & it sits level on that bike.

Glenn

I put one of these on my 86 Rockhopper and with the adjustability, it sits VERY level.
