Did I score a deal from the BBC (Budget Bicycle Center) at the Ann Arbor Bike Show?

Matt, who manned the outdoor stand with the huge Hertz truck said they were from Wisconsin. I neglected to inquire whether they were from Madison.

Anyway not until I pumped up the tires tonight for a quick test ride did I notice the $60 Motobecane Grant Touring with the $639 decal. Everything else was dirty on the bike, but the decal.

Vitus 888 tubeset, I will make this bike my grocery getter.

oddjob2- You have scored a deal! A full Vitus 888/Durifort frame and fork, a Stronglight 99 triple with Huret Duopar and Weinmann brakes. The stem and levers are junky but easy to replace. Well done!

$60 is way cool for this bike. My brother used to own one and it was a sweet bike.

Dude, that bike is worth at least $639. I'm sure I saw I for more than that on eBay.

Parked (inexplicably) in front of a snowbank. (?!)

This has to be the most miraculous C&V transaction to date! It might even elevate you to sainthood! To have somehow managed to score a 90% discount from BBC is simply astounding!

Did you lace their bottle of soda with a mind control drug beforehand? Did you flash a handgun, demand the bike, and they still managed to collect $60? Did you hold your thumb over the original price tag covering the last digit ($639) and ask if they would knock off $3 since it was the end of the day?

Yes, it's a deal either way but I have to agree the fork looks a little off.

It may be that BBC prices only hold true on ebay. It seems that if the bike leaves the Madison area its price becomes more rational even if it is sold in Ann Arbor.

It's not just Ebay prices but if you step into their used bike store you'll see the crazy prices. The two stores they have with new bikes have normal prices as we bought my wife's Breezer Uptown Infinity there two years ago.

Certainly a good score ! The straight/ bent forks possibility cant be judged from the photo - its clearly a wide angle lens, with serious distortion of lines of horizontals and verticals - look at the lines of the storage sheds. All the best with that.

Bike rides fine. I've pulled the fork for headset maintenance and it looks perfectly fine. Only problem is the rear rim has a crack in it. Brake cables used for derailleurs and a Wald steel quill stem, easily upgraded.

To clear up the BBC confusion, no the bike wasn't marked $699. It was marked at $100 and I purchased it for $60. I just figured after I began to clean the bike up and saw the newish BBC sticker on what was otherwise a neglected bike and the fact that the sellers who brought more than 100 bikes were from Wisconsin, it probably was an unmarked BBC sales operation. So knowing BBC's pricing practices, I figure the "coveted" BBC decal is worth $639.

Folks, the only thing that the BBC sticker on this bike means is that, at some point in the last thirty years or so, it passed through Roger's shop and was sold as a used bike. No need to get all excited here....

I highly doubt the folks selling it were from BBC. They don't sell at swap meets, they buy there! I used to work there, fwiw, a long time ago. I was at the AAS swap this past Sunday, saw the big U-Haul, but didn't see any indication that it was a BBC crew (though I guess that is (very remotely) possible).

Well, now you have to defend them every time a thread pops up with a crazy BBC price.....

This is a first for sure, a good score from our friends at BBC.

Not only that, but now he has to sing the BBC anthem at the next Super Bowl.

Just kidding, OJ - Good score. The rear DR alone was worth the price!
