Jack Taylor Tour of Britain #7338

After a crash and tearing the bike down three years ago I finally decided to reassemble this bike. I bought the frame new from Fulton Street Cycles in San Francisco in 1978. First step was to get the frame set up to check the alignment. I was worried it may have been damaged in the crash (although the paint was unscathed except for a few tiny chips) and I suppose the fear that it may have been tweaked kept me from putting it back together. Anyway, the frame checked out perfectly true; all that was required was to realign the derailleur hanger. She rides wonderfully!

I don't have the software to adjust the photos so I can post them here so see the link below. The paint, stripping and transfers are all original. Many of the components are also. My comments with the photos tell what has been replaced. Enjoy.

Hey Vince, that is indeed a beauty of a bicycle. I like pretty much all the JT bicycles, but the ToB has got to be my favorite of their lineup. I'm guessing it's the lugs that make it work so well for me.

That's a monstrously handsome bike. Excellent work. Please ride it hard.

[QUOTE]First rate - though I do think it's screaming for a Brooks./QUOTE]

It originally had an Ideale #91 cut away saddle, but it broke in half (!) when I crashed. But I have never been totally satisfied with the leather saddles. I get serious numbness from both the Ideale and Brooks saddles (and I actually have sold the ones I had in my collection). My comments on Flickr (about the various parts used and my rationale) state that I really want a Fizik Aliante Carbon in brown. I ride one on my CAAD9 and my bottom is happier than it has ever been. I may ask Fizik for a quote on a custom brown cover for an Aliante. The Sella Italia Turbo re-issue that is on it isn't bad. No numbness after an hour in the saddle and the suede is nice. But it isn't quite there compared to the Aliante.

Thanks for the kind comments guys. It is just one of many beautiful bikes owned by folks on this site.

You really need to take this to Cirque du Cyclisme and enter it in the competition there. I'd love to see this in the flesh.

Outstanding bike. Nicely detailed with the pump and water bottle too.

I remember seeing these back in the day at Turin bike shop in Chicago. The color combinations were amazing. The double box lining is stunning on these bikes. A friend of mine has one in black. It still looks wonderful after 40 years of use.

I couldn't agree with you more bc. Attention to detail in reassembling this bike really paid off well.

One thing about English bikes as a rule when compared to Italian bicycles is the quality of the paintwork, leading to longevity far beyond that of Italian bicycles. When you add in the nicely done box-lining on the JT bicycles, these machines really stand the test of time.

Unfortunately, I won't be in the area this year, otherwise I would attend. Not so sure about showing the bike though.

I'm a veteran of the classic car hobby too. I owned a 1967 Mercedes-Benz 250SL from 1971 to 2006. In 1974 a fellow made a suggestion similar to yours about the car. That got me on a slippery slope of prepping and showing the car, all the while driving and enjoying it. It was never restored and we won our last concours event with it in 2006 (and it had 148,000 miles on it then). It finally wore me down and I sold it. My plan for the Tour of Britain is to do what I've always done with it; ride it and enjoy it.

Since you're not in the area, it's a moot point. I can assure you that the majority of bikes that win at Cirque are riders, not garage queens. My Norman Rapide was filthy when I entered it, but the bike had cred because of the dirt and won despite the crusty bottom bracket shell, dirt all over the brake calipers and other signs of the bike having been ridden on a regular basis. I'm with you on just enjoying the bike for what it is. If putting it into competitions makes it less enjoyable, then avoid it. I'm probably not going to enter anything this year myself, though I could get motivated and decide to finish something to take for the show.

Photogravity - Good the hear it doesn't require a garage queen to be appreciated. And of course, cars are vastly harder to keep in concours condition if you drive them the way I did. Anyway, thanks for the heads up about the event and I'll pencil it in for next year; it looks like an event I would enjoy attending. Maybe I will see you there.
