Schwinn Traveler

hey everyone just wanted to share this cool restoration im working on. I picked up this old traveler and striped it down and im fixing it back up with not correct components. This bike needs brake levers and cables and the shifter cable left but it currently weighs 20.4lbs. I took the front chain ring apart and now it only has the big gear left. This will be a cool bike to ride around.

And don't forget bar tape! Looks like a fun project though, and that's extremely light for that bike... you haven't been drilling anything have you?

I have two Travelers. One is a Fixie and it was easy to get under 20 pounds and the other is a stock frame and fork with lighter components and 22 pounds was not hard to achive. I think it weighted 25 stock. Frame and fork weighted 7 pounds. The forks are the heavy part in the Traveler bikes with the 4130 frames. A 4130 frame is about one pound more than a 531 frame. I have weighted quite a few schwinn bikes like the Traveler and they do vary as much as 6 ounces for a given frame size. I wonder if they built some with lighter tubing but labeled them 4130?

I have been a bike flipper for 8-9 years and have gone through at least 50 Travelers. Two of them I kept for quite a while as they were my size and they were light as Centurions. Back then I did not weight them as most came in one door and out the other. I took this picture today of this 58-6o cm Traveler frame and fork. Frame weights 5 lb 8 ounces. Fork is 1 lb 12 ounces. My 1972 Raleigh Grand Sport,1972 Raleigh Super Course and this 1983 Traveler forks all weigh the same at 1 lb 12 ounces. The Raleigh Grand Sport 531 frame weighs 4 lb 12 ounces. The flipper bikes were not torn down far enough to weigh just the frame. The late 1980's Traveler is a nice frame. I am looking for a 1988-91 56cm Traveler frame.

o.O I'm just curious what years weigh that little, I assume one of the bikes you mentioned before is an 83 Traveler?

The Traveler pictured above is a 1983 and it weights 5 lb 8 ounces. I did have 56cm 1988-90 Traveler that weighted only 4 lb 15 ounces. I think it was Tenax tubing. I sold it in a moment of weakness. Maybe it was the two Circuit's I had that made me do it. A friend still has one of the Circuit's. I think Schwinn as it was making the change to aluminum used what they had to get them out the door,

That's cool I had no idea the Traveler ever got upgraded to tenax.

i should mention that the coolest part of the bike is the wheel set which is what i started with. its a matched set of sunshine pro-om hubs and matching fiamme ergal rims. they are a tubular or sewup set up idk which is correct terminology. if any one has any information about them i would appreciate it

Great build so far the nice tubulars explain a a couple of pounds of the total weight. With modern light weight tires I suspect you can bring this build in under 20lbs which is impressive for a vintage bike.
