Brake Cables Peugeot Racing Team

Hi there,

I have an old racing team which does not have functioning breaks due to a kink in the cable housing as it enters the break leavers. Took it to halfords who said they could not fix this as they do not supply this type of old part and had also checked with their raleigh suppliers who said something similar (im assuming they mean the cable housing?). Anyone know what cable set would be suitible for around 1980's peugeot or how I can fix this?

Thanks,

Emma

Emma. Brakes. Not breaks. You might have to supply pictures because any bike shop should have brake cable housings that would work on a 1980's bike. Unless there's something odd about them?

I don't think I mean housing any more . Where the break cable enters the leavers, the little plastic bit which holds it in place is broken so the cable bends. I'll upload a picture now. Sorry, I don't know bike terminology!

That lools like a standard brake lever ferrule. They're pretty common. My current supplier's catalog shows them, in aluminum, for $0.20. Hard to imagine your LBS doesn't have one or couldn't get it. I'm assuming you're in the UK based on the Halford's reference?

Yes UK based. That's odd! The guy said because of the age of the bike he couldn't fix it. So does the ferrule simply slot into the leaver and you push the cable through?

Think I may do! Is a ferrule a standard thing? Worked out the cable is 5.1 mm outer, but will the ferrule fit into the leaver? Thanks for your replies!

Hi Emma, I don't know what part of the Uk you are in, but I'm sure there'll be an independent bike shop, Halfords staff are usually next to useless unless they're enthusiasts. I have just restored my 1979 / 1980 peugeot and my local shop supplied aluminium ferrules to fit, ( albeit, they didn't have the 'adjustable' type in aluminium to fit) best thing to do is take your bike along and they'll sort you out.

You've run into the somewhat common dilemma of big bike store ennui. They see a two dollar part and can't be bothered. No money there, unless they try to sell you a new bike. A small, neighborhood shop, on the other hand, is usually, but not always, interested in helping folks keep their bike running and on the road. A generalization but often holds true. You might even run into a nice person who will fix the small problem for you for free. If so, take him your future business...and maybe some cookies.

The ferrule is basically a cable stop that acts as an interface/adapter between the cable housing and lever bidy. If you weren't in the UK, I'd just mail you one but it would probably take weeks to get there and the shipping would be far more than the cost of the ferrule. As suggested, try a smaller, local bicycle store, preferably an older one.

If possible, get a ferrule that includes a screw adjuster. But if that isn't available, no big deal.
