Brand New Alloy/Steel 7/8 speed freewheels - talking with the manufacturer..
I have one of these Marchisio 7 speed alloy freewheels.
they also made 8 speeds(have one also)
they are more or less a cassette, the first cog comes off with the chain whip and cogs can be replaced very easily, they are splined. I just changed some of my cogs because Finland is flatlander country.
I contacted the rep and asked about them, he said they are not being made anymore, he does not understand as there is a growing demand for high quality freewheels...there is only so much NOS left out there.
He said he will bring this up at next board meeting as they get asked more and more for them.
Guys- can we tell them in this forum thread that
THERE IS A MARKET FOR NEW FREEWHEELS!
the cogs were either alloy or steel, I have the smallest cog steel on mine.
they weight 260g alloy
Im ready to buy 10 of them for myself, but its nice to be able to replace the cogs when they wear out.

I made a aluminum cogged freewheel once. It wore quickly. Then I made another one from aluminum mixed with 15% silicon carbide (metal matrix) and it lasted a bit longer.
I would certainly buy a couple of steel freewheels, made in Europe in five or six speed and may be one alloy

I think it's a fantastic idea. I would buy a few. If they could add a grease/oil port on the body, that would be even better.

Have you guys checked out the IRD (Interloc Racing Design) freewheels? No alloy, but a decent new freewheel. I have one on my bike.

If they price these new Aluminum FW right, they would surely fulfill a lot of C&V weenie dreams that had been so unaffordable for many. I'm in for a couple if they would sell them for under 100 bucks each..... and maybe the NOS alloy FW speculators at Ebay might consider pricing NOS ones more reasonably if that happens too...

incazzare.
IRD, Shimano, Sunrace... They all make freewheels. I'm sure others do, too. I have never had a problem finding a new freewheel.

Most of the later SunTours and Shimanos used threads on only the outer cog or two -- all of the mid-size and large cogs were splined, which was a great improvement over the traditional European all-thread design, with LH threads in the two lowest positions.

I would not be interested in a new freewheel with a tooth profile like that regardless of whether it was aluminum or steel.
