Problems adjusting gears on 1950s JC Higgins
Hey all,
I'm trying to fix up my wife's 1960s JC Higgins three speed. I've cleaned everything out, reoiled and greased. Everything's going well, except I had the tension on the gears right- followed Sheldon's guide which was good.
BUT it's slipping up gears now. So in low it slips up to neutral, in neutral it slips into high. Any ideas on what the problem might be? When it slips the gear changes, and the shifter stays in position. I'm hoping its not internal.
Thanks!
Ash

Neutral or normal? That is, does it slip into the neutral position (no gears engaged) or the normal (direct drive gear)?
Anyway, almost always a cable problem. Is it a new cable? They can stretch. I'd snug it up a bit.

Also check the fulcrum clamp and the pulley clamp. I have seen these slowly slide up, loosening the cable tension slightly and causing the symptoms you describe.

It slips into normal.
Mi feel as thought taught was is correct on the tight end, but too loose fr high (or isn't low)... Whichever. While tightness is perfect for that gear loose us really loose on other end. Thoughts? New cable maybe?
ill chek the other bits today also.

Turns out middle/normal/second gear was busted inside the Hub. So, unless I can replace it with a part, my wife's going to riding in low or high only.
