picked this up off craigslist a few weeks ago for $100. it looked in sad shape, but it was complete and the paint was nice. i got new decals off velocals and shined all the aluminum. new tires, saddle, cables and shimano 600 brakes. and i think it came out pretty good. the forks have been sleeved and pinned so i guess they are ok. not sure if i'm gonna keep it or not. i did put it on craigslist for a higher price than i think its worth. see what happens.

Really nice detail work on the Viscount. You might consider mentioning to potential buyers that it comes with the original 'death fork'.

I put that in the ad. It has been pinned. Is that how they attempted to repair them?

Very nice work Sloar. It looks pristine.

You had a whole lot more to work with than I do with my recent freebie, an earlier Lambert. (sorry for the crappy pic)

This one has the original unmodified "death fork". Looks like all three versions were pinned.

Great looking bikes! I kind of like those Viscounts but don't know much 'bout them. that's steel and a pressed in BB right?

Great looking Aero Space Viscount! Very nice looking and worthy to ride!

I'm curious about the crankset. I've worked with both the T.A. and the Nervar 50.4 BCD cranks, but notice that the Viscount and Lambert cranks look to have an extra set of bolts and holes (one set of 6 above the 50.4 set to mount the big ring to the crank arm, and another set of 6 that appear to mount the smaller inner ring which appears to be about a 40-42 tooth.)

Does anyone have any closeup pictures of the drive side Viscount or Lambert cranks front and reverses sides? Removed from the BB would be great!

As a comparison here is a Nervar...

...and a T.A.

No; in fact the pin was usually where they failed.

Yeah, my '72 Lambert Grand Prix came with the death fork, also pinned (I never used it; I got it as a frame set w/a nice Tange steel fork). But with the standard English threaded BB, I guess I kinda lucked out there. It's still my favorite Frankenbike, undergoing a funky rolling restomod. Rode it a total 40 miles yesterday, including an 18 mile ride to work in exactly 1 hour. Best part of my day, for sure.

Pastor Bob: I don't know if these are the ones you're looking for, most Lambert/Viscount cranks are the round-hole design like you see on Sloar's bike above. Mine, the only Lambert triple I've ever seen in the flesh, looks like a TA knockoff, or maybe just manufactured by TA and stamped and stickered with the Lambert name? Not sure. I don't have a TA to compare it to.

EDIT: here's an eBay listing for one of the round hole ones, w/good close pix.

Nice Viscount! Well done.

BTW, did anyone ever find actual evidence of fatal accidents because of this fork? Is it really more dangerous than other aluminum forks?

That's pretty wild! The small ring on the Viscount/Lambert cranks are doubled bolted on each arm!

Do you make a habit of cross chaining or is it just for pictures?

Nice Viscount, I wish I could find one large enough for my own use. Darn genetics.

I built one for my son, it had the third revision death fork identifiable by a steel plug visible under the fork crown and easily tested with a magnet. I still didn't trust it so I built it with a new Cro-Mo fork from my LBS. I also had to switch the chainrings due to the original being badly worn.

The steel plug I mentioned,

The bottom bracket design leaves a bit to be desired but they sure are smooth and my sons is on original wheel bearings which are still smooth as silk, I did replace the bottom bracket sealed bearings as they felt notchy and appeared to have had a bit of moisture intrusion.

One thing I had major issues with was that I couldn't get the steering stem bolt to stay tight for the life of me, I ended up resorting to blue Loc-tite to stop it from coming loose all the time.

Here's the one I built for my son,

Then yours is supposedly the best of the bunch (as was mine), when I built mine I was strongly advised by forum members to not ride it with that fork and since I'm fond of my sons face the way it is I took their advice and I think the modern fork I used is a really good fit for the bike and it's also a LOT lighter than the death fork I removed.

Yes, the original fork is quite heavy: the blades and crown are a single, solid cast aluminum unit so any fork (even steel) built from tubing is likely to be lighter.

When I overhauled my Aerospace Pro, I too marveled at how heavy the "Death Fork" was. I replaced mine with an affordable chrome steel fork from Niagara Cycle.

IIRC, the silver/blue bikes came with tubular wheels and tires and the silver/black bikes came with clinchers.

My sons Pro is silver/black and was virtually 100% original when we got it and it's got tubulars, almost every part on the bike is badged Viscount which is what makes me believe his was all original. It had been sitting a long, long time.

One other thing that I just remembered, the Lamberts and Viscounts have different bottom bracket tapers so Lambert arms won't fit a Viscount spindle or vice versa.
