Nope, the reach is too long on the Mafacs. I sort of figured it would be. The look is all wrong too. Too "clunky", for lack of a better word. This frame begs for something more graceful.

With 700x25's and flat footed, I can lift it a good 1 1/2 +/- inches off the ground before before pelvic bone touches steel. Not a perfect fit, but completely acceptable. I put the GB alongside my beater Super Course I just finished, and while the top tube is only about a centimeter higher on the GB, the lower head lug is MUCH lower. That might be some of the optical illusion making the GB seem much larger than it actually is. It also has WAY more relaxed geometry than the Super Course. Head tube angle, and the rear tire is at least two inches from the seat tube, if not more. More of a sport touring than a racing bike. It should be a relaxed and wonderful riding machine once completed.,,,,BD

I appreciate the build up to unveiling your purchase/trade, and what a gorges acquisition. Geoffrey Butler was unknown to me until I saw the post. Can't wait to see it completed.

The GB will be an amazing rider. My Roberts is pretty darn amazing. I think Chas. Roberts is a very good frame builder though I am sure pops built both our bikes.

Now that is what I was looking for!! That is a VERY nice color combo! Definite inspiration, and a damn nice looking Romic! That is another of my grail bikes too, especially since they were made right here in my home town! Maybe someday I will get my hands on that one in rural Louisiana. It has been sitting in a closed down bike shop for close to 30 years, kept by the brother of the original owner who still owns the building. Same as yours, but free of decals as per special order, and a light almost Raleigh Professional shade of blue.,,,,BD

That pic is old, the whole "original" build up didn't last long. It's way different now! The gold housing stays forever though, as it's nice to look at.

If that Louisiana Romic is for sale, and it's my size....I want it Great riding bikes.

It's about the same size as the GB. I want it for sure, and the guys phone number is permanently in my memory. He was supposed to contact his brother, who supposedly was a little on the greedy side. I tried contacting him again via text, and got no response. He opens for about three hours on Saturday mornings, the only day a week he is open. I barely scratched the surface, but in one bin was about 10 sets of NOS Weinmann brake levers, and he paid me for helping one Saturday, with an NOS set of Barcons. I wish I could have spent more time digging around.,,,,BD

I'm partially through the cleaning, most of the paint chips touched up, and even touched up the DT decal. It's looking WAY better already. But since I put the wheels on it, I am noticing just how relaxed the geometry is. I can easily read the headbadge standing directly over the headset. I have a feeling this bike is going to be a treat to ride, with nice slow handling. Perfect for the leisurely Sunday ride it will be most likely used for, with the local vintage bike club.,,,,BD

Bummer though. I can't use the cranks off of the Viscount. I had forgotten that is has the straight (non tapered) spindle.

HA I SAW THAT FRAME!

i live in baltimore, but i'm originally from texas and my parents live in kingwood. back in february i was biking that road and noticed the little shop, which looked cool so i stopped in. i saw that frame hanging on his back porch and really wanted to talk him into selling it to me, i don't think he *really* knew what he had, even though he knew it was nice. unfortunately it's considerably too big for me to bother taking on as another project. when i saw it, he had stuck some ugly new black deep-v paired-spoke wheels on it *sigh* glad it went to a good home!

Small world huh? Yeah Matt is a good guy, and been to the shop many times. Like most modern LBS owners they spend more time interested in doing business than what an old bike is worth. He had told me about his fixie plans, and it had a slightly less abusive set of Normandy/Araya/Weinmann clone 27 inchers on it when I stopped by. He accepted my generous trade, and was very happy with the deal. I also tried talking him out of the late 30's Hiawatha balloon tire frame hanging in the boneyard, but no dice. It belonged to a friend of his mechanic.,,,,BD

Vintage BMX though, he would know the value of it. He was a racer back in the early 80's, and still has a few hanging in the rafters of the garage in back.

This was the style of Hiawatha frame, it was even the same color.

Top tube clamp mystery solved. Took them all off for the pre polish cleaning, removed some rust, and a faint script proclaiming DURA ACE was revealed. Must be part of the first gen group, or close on it's heels.,,,,BD

Some in progress pics. All polished up, and a few parts installed. I gave up on the seat tube lug. The rust is already set into the steel, and only about half the chrome is left. It will be stored in such a way that it won't rust much more, if any. Getting excited about the first ride.,,,,BD

Thanks, I was quite surprised I ended up with it to be honest. Today I just went ahead and installed the Campy NR FD/RD and Nervar Star crankset, and a set of GB bars and stem from the stash. I can always change parts later when I can afford to buy what I want for it. The GB stems I have are either super long, or Schwinn diameter. Funny thing is I tried putting the Pivo stem/Phillippe bar combo on it from the Grand Record, and even just rolling around on it, something was majorly wrong with the handling. It was too close, and seem to want to steer like it was top heavy. I put the crazy long GB stem and bars on it, and everything just fell into place. The front axle is hidden from view while on the hoods, and the reach is nearly perfect. So far, brakes are all I am lacking, and I am not sure what I want to use on it. I guess the Universals from the Trek 510? They have great feel and modulation.,,,,BD

Two more update pics. The cable housing might have to wait, but I am thinking of picking up the brown Newbaums wrap today. Only ONE place in town has it, and I am surprised that they have it even. Hopefully there will be enough to do the HUGE drops on these GB bars. They're some of the largest I've ever seen. I imagine I will probably rob the Universal brakes off of the Trek sometime today or tomorrow, and when I come into some more cash, I'll get a set of Campy brakes and another seatpost for the Trek.,,,,BD

Interesting that the frame looked humongous until the bars and saddle were on it. Now it looks more normal.,,,,BD

Got the brown Newbaums, and the same shop had NEW or NOS clear housing! She called it Campagnolo derailleur housing. I have a feeling it will work fine for brakes. If not back to the drawing board.,,,,BD

Well, the Unversal 77's from the Trek didn't have enough reach, so for the time being I am running the Mod 61 centerpulls. It gives it a nice stately look. For now, it's done! I used the chainstay wrap/shellac trick from that Alyeska that made the rounds on here a while back. About the time I put the last coat on, here came the humidity and rain. I brought it into the air conditioning, and it hardened up quickly. It's ready for the club ride in the morning.. I have a set of SKS silver fenders, that may go on tomorrow afternoon.,,,,BD

Thanks. Eight days huh? If I had waited for Campy brakes it would have been months possibly. I couldn't wait that long. I took it on a very short ride, touching only the hoods as not to mar the shellac. It was nice! tomorrow is the shakedown, about 12-15 miles.,,,,BD

I've got several colors of twine, but I am thinking about leaving it off. It's a little "hairy" for lack of a better word, not the string style. I like the clean look for this one anyway. I sold my buddy a too small for me chrome Paramount 4-5 years ago, and this project inspired him to finally get going on it. We've been friends for 5-6 years, and we've never ridden together until last weekend, and only around the block. We definitely tore up the flea markets though.,,,,BD

I may touch up the blue in the brake lettering, as icing on the cake. It's still there, but doesn't show up very often in pics, unless it's almost a straight on shot.,,,,BD
