build up my wife a vintage trek? or buy new?
so i have this tiny trek 460 frame in my garage, its in really bad shape, i picked it up at the coop, it was doomed to the scrap bin, lots of rust, but the frame is straight and intact... anyway, recently my wife has gotten more and more interested in riding, she wants to do longer rides but only has her Raleigh C40 hybrid, basic bike to lug around the kids...
i mentioned to her that i could build her up a nice road bike with the trek frame, she was excited about that, so i threw a few wheels i had laying around on the frame and had her step over the frame, it seemed a little big for her, so my question is ...
do the WSD treks that the new models have really make a difference? geometry wise?
the frame is small enough, my plan is to put some 700c wheels on it, maybe 650bs if the brakes reach, the 27x1 1/4 were a little big for the test, but the reach felt fine for her.
im hoping it works out, my plan is complete custom job with her favorite color powder coated and some custom trek decals, we will see
thanks for the input

The new frames are quite different IMHO. In most cases the handlebars are a lot higher than horizontal TT diamond frames. Also, room for fenders. It is what many people like. I acquired a WSD Trek Pilot this winter or cheap. It is an amazingly nice riding aluminum framed bike. Also, the brifters are like having an automatic tranny. Not my chosen workhorse, but I keep it for guests.
Go to the Trek LBS test ride before building the 460. Actually the FX line is very nice at a popular pricepoint. The hybrid crowd on BF love 'em.

For what you'd sink into brifters and a modern drovetrain, buy a whole bike.

What I have been told by industry guys is that the WSD stuff is basically the same geometry but handlebar design, seat style, crank length, and shifters are different for smaller hands.

I like the idea of 650b wheels on this bike and a repaint; that would be a sweet set-up.

If the price is acceptable, you can't do too much better than an old touring 720.

Don't try to make the 56cm Trek work with smaller wheels. A frame that's a bad fit is a bad idea. I would approach this keeping the objective of your effort as the target, you want to get your wife to ride more. Whatever you buy has to be an easy to ride bike or she'll lose interest. If that means buying new, then I'd do it. If you get a vintage ride, make sure she's OK with the shifters on that bike. Also, don't rule out late model used off CL. As for new WSD, some manufacturers use the same frame as the men's model, some do not. The difference for those that make women's specific frames is the top tube, it's shorter. The LBS you deal with will be able to explain what their WSD bikes measurements are and if they are different.
BTW, Bill is correct, a 52 cm will be too big for her.

i kinda thought it would be too big for her, wasn't sure...its definitely too small for me hence "tiny" when i get home on wednesday ill check it again , she is excited about a custom paint job, i already did one on my trek 930, and she wants the same experience the more we talk about it, ill just wait for another tiny frame to come my way...besides I can't justify dropping a couple hundy on a new bike , when she really wants a custom vintage ride.

There were a couple of 18 inch frame Trek road bikes. I had a 1987 ish 400 Elance triple in an 18 inch size. (On most Trek models, the 19 inch was the smallest).
Buyer drove 3 hours one way to get that Trek from me.

I think you are the C + V mileage champ for fetching deals! While I cover a wide region, my longest bike specific drive is about 65 miles.
