They have one of those hanging on the wall in one of my local bike shops. I did a double take the first time I saw it. Very odd.

appears to have been built with the patented features created & owned by Robert Barrett of Angola, New York.

first commercial use of these features was by Takara ca. 1976.

Technically, it isn't a tandem. The term "tandem" refers to being in line, one behind the other, and is not limited to just two people or two whatever. What we refer to as "triplet" bikes are also tandems. You can also have cars, trucks, etc., riding in tandem, one behind the other. Heck, a well-ordered pace line has riders in tandem.

So what is thiis thing called? I have no idea, but I bet I would crash on it in 60 seconds or less. Probably a lot less.

Neato! Could you ride it alone? I think yes, but not well, and it would look even stranger than the alternative. I can't figure out how you'd pedal without your inside thigh hitting the crossbar. The right side has a shorter head tube and stem.

Overall seems like an incredibly stupid design since it has none of the drafting benefits of a standard tandem.

If one rider was larger than the other, wouldn't they just keep going around in a circle?

"Sociables" I believe is what they are called.

There was a fellow in Berkeley in the mid-seventies who made at least a couple of really beautiful sociables based on a Schwinn Paramount.

Yes, this is not a tandem. It's called a sociable, presumably since it allows the two riders to easily converse while riding. And they are not particularly difficult to ride solo although there is a bit of a tilt when doing so.

No, you just ride with a bit of a tilt, same as when riding with panniers that are unevenly loaded. It's quite easy to ride a 'sociable' (that's what they are called since they aren't tandems) solo - but with even more of a tilt.

yes, that was Bob Barrett. he made a dozen or so sociables or side-by-sides, all scratch built. not based on a stock frame. there were various gearings, some planetary, some derailleur.

he has patents on the features shown in the bicycle under discusion.
